Oh! I asked him, saying, "Who is it that has arisen from the noble Shakya lineage, possesses the three baskets, proclaims the Dharma, and has the confidence of reason and liberation?" Venerable Nye-ga said to me, "Householder, I myself have arisen from the Shakya lineage, possess the three baskets, proclaim the Dharma, and have the confidence of reason and liberation." I said to Venerable Nye-ga, "Noble one, please accept this pair of cloths, and I will cherish and offer them." Venerable Nye-ga said, "Householder, do you not even know how to give alms? When offering to the Sangha of monks, including the Buddha, you should let me rejoice alongside the elders, and then give it to me." I did just that, so what fault do I have in this? The almsman went to the temple, and the monks said to him, "Whoever is similar to the almsman, if a householder generates faith, he will also thunder elsewhere and rain elsewhere." He said, "What is wrong with that? It is like someone going there and saying, 'Householder, if you have merit from giving completely, but no merit from enjoying completely.' Because the Blessed One's retinue of one thousand two hundred and fifty needs one thousand two hundred and fifty pairs of cloths to be satisfied, this will soon be completely exhausted on the clothesline for Dharma robes. The Blessed One has also said that if food is obtained, even the leaves of the Bodhi tree can be used to distribute it; if clothes are obtained, even the wick of a lamp can be used to distribute it.' If it is not used for distribution, then these of yours will not be enjoyed either." After he said this, he asked, "Noble one, what is the way to have both merit from giving completely and merit from enjoying completely?" He replied, "If you bestow this pair of cloths upon someone who has arisen from the Shakya lineage, possesses the three baskets, proclaims the Dharma, and has the confidence of reason and liberation, then...

It also becomes the merit arising from your complete giving and the merit arising from complete enjoyment. Thus he said. That person said this: Who is ordained from the Shakya clan, possesses the three pitakas, preaches the Dharma, and has fearlessness of reason and liberation? If asked in this way, that person would say: I am ordained from the Shakya clan, possess the three pitakas, preach the Dharma, and have fearlessness of reason and liberation. Having said that, that person began to give those two cloths to him, and that person said: Householder, do you not even know how to give? When offering to the Sangha of monks including the Buddha, at that time, let me rejoice next to the elder, and then give it to me. Having said that, that person did just that, what fault is there in that person? Monks, why do monks knowingly say that they will give to an individual the gains dedicated to the Sangha? When rebuking and scolding, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One said: Because of this event, because of this origin, because of this time, the Sangha gathers. And so on, just like before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, and so on, just like before. The Blessed One rebuked Nanda. Nanda, is it true that you knowingly allow the gains dedicated to the Sangha to be given to an individual? Venerable one, it is true. The Blessed One rebuked, saying: It is not the conduct of a renunciate, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, this is not something that a renunciate should do. Then, after the Blessed One rebuked in various ways, he said to the monks: Monks, because you have seen such ten benefits, you should establish the basis of training for the Shravakas in the Vinaya. And so on, just like before. My Shravakas should recite the training of the Vinaya in this way: If any monk knowingly transfers the gains dedicated to the Sangha to an individual

If he causes it to be transferred, it is a Nissaggiya Pacittiya. Furthermore, "which Bhikshu" refers to the son of the Shakya, Nanda, or anyone else like him. "To the Sangha" refers to the Sangha of the Hearers of the Tathagata. "Dedicated" means designated. "Gain" refers to two kinds of gain: gain of clothing and gain of food. In this context, it is understood to mean gain of clothing. "Knowingly" means that he knows it himself, or that others have told him. "If he causes it to be transferred to himself" means if he causes it to be offered to himself. "Nissaggiya Pacittiya" means that after abandoning that object, he should confess the offense of Pacittiya. Therefore, it is said to be a Nissaggiya Pacittiya. Vinaya-vibhaṅga, Volume Thirty-seven. How does one incur an offense in that case? If a Bhikshu transfers a gain dedicated to one person to himself, he commits a Dukkaṭa in causing the transfer, and if he obtains it, he incurs a Nissaggiya Pacittiya. If a Bhikshu transfers a gain of clothing dedicated to two people to himself, he commits a Dukkaṭa in causing the transfer, and if he obtains it, he incurs a Nissaggiya Pacittiya. If a Bhikshu transfers a gain dedicated to a very large number of people to himself, he commits a Dukkaṭa in causing the transfer, and if he obtains it, he incurs a Nissaggiya Pacittiya. If a Bhikshu transfers a gain dedicated to the Sangha to himself, he commits a Dukkaṭa in causing the transfer, and if he obtains it, he incurs a Nissaggiya Pacittiya. If a Bhikshu transfers a gain dedicated to one person to another person, he commits a Dukkaṭa in causing the transfer, and if he obtains it, he incurs only a Dukkaṭa. If a Bhikshu transfers a gain dedicated to one person to two other people, he commits a Dukkaṭa in causing the transfer, and if he obtains it, he incurs only a Dukkaṭa.
