Some people think that it is permissible to have signs and hold gold because they can undoubtedly enjoy the five objects of desire. They hold this view, proclaim the vast roar of the lion, and truly roar the lion's roar in the Sangha. Monks, I also say this, it is not permissible for monks to have signs, and the practitioners of the sons of Shakya should not hold gold. If someone thinks that it is permissible to have signs and hold gold, that is not the Dharma of a practitioner, nor is it the Dharma of the sons of Shakya. Monks, therefore, from now on, those of you who want wood should look for wood everywhere, those who want grass should look for grass, those who want vehicle work should look for vehicle work, and those who want to hire people should look for hiring people everywhere. Whoever says this should not say to hold gold. This is just something that happened temporarily, and the Buddha, the Bhagavan, will not temporarily establish the basis of the precepts for the disciples to be tamed. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was staying in Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's Garden in Shravasti. At that time, the group of six monks took gold and silver with their own hands, allowed others to take it, piled it into one pile, piled it into two piles, and placed it on beds, small beds, and small stools. Other heretics, knowledgeable people, and practitioners of the sons of Shakya did not abandon or give up these behaviors, and still each did not give up. They did this, taking gold and silver with their own hands, allowing others to take it, piling it into one pile, piling it into two piles, and placing it on beds, small beds, and small stools. Brahmins and householders also took gold and silver with their own hands, allowed others to take it, piled it into one pile, piled it into two piles, and placed it on beds, small beds, and small stools. Knowledgeable people would think, what is the difference between the practitioners of the sons of Shakya and the Brahmins and householders? What is the idea? What is the difference? Who would still think of giving alms and offerings to these bald-headed practitioners?

They would mock, ridicule, and insult. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, regarding this occurrence, this origin, and this occasion, convened the assembly of monks, etc., as before. The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, knowingly commit offenses, etc., also as before. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked the group of six monks, saying: Monks, is it true that you personally take gold and silver and cause others to take it? Venerable One, it is true. The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them, saying: This is not the way of a renunciant, it is not in accordance, it is not proper, it is not in accordance with the rules, it is not something to be done by one who has gone forth. Then, after rebuking them in various ways, the Blessed One addressed the monks, saying: Monks, therefore, having truly seen ten benefits, a basis for training should be established for the hearers of the teachings, etc., as before. My hearers of the teachings should recite the basis for training in this way: If any monk personally takes gold and silver, or causes others to take it, it is an offense entailing forfeiture. Any monk, refers to the group of six monks, or anyone else like them. Personally, refers to with one's own hand. Gold and silver, refers to copper and gold. Takes, refers to taking oneself. Causes to take, refers to causing others to take. An offense entailing forfeiture, refers to abandoning that object and confessing the offense of the offense entailing forfeiture, therefore it is called an offense entailing forfeiture. So, how does one become liable to an offense? Through eight ways: Take this! Take from here! Take this much! Bring this! Bring from here! Bring this much! Put this! Put here! Put this much! Take that! Take from there! Take that much! Bring that! Bring from there! Bring that much! Put that! Put there! Put that much!
