Is it permissible for them to have obvious signs? Do the renunciates, sons of the Shakya, possess gold? Or, it is not permissible for monks to have obvious signs, and the renunciates, sons of the Shakya, do not possess gold. Then, some say this: it is permissible for monks to have obvious signs, and the renunciates, sons of the Shakya, possess gold. Some say this: it is not permissible for monks to have obvious signs, and the renunciates, sons of the Shakya, do not possess gold. Venerable sir, those who say that it is not permissible for monks to have obvious signs, and the renunciates, sons of the Shakya, possess gold, how do those who say that express it in such a way that they do not slander the Blessed One, nor go too far, and that they speak in accordance with what the Blessed One has said, are preachers of the Dharma, express the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma, and that those who speak in accordance with what has been said do not have any faults like being blamed by others for agreeing with their Dharma? Then I said to him: Village head, those who say that it is permissible for monks to have obvious signs, and the renunciates, sons of the Shakya, possess gold, when they express it in that way, they are slandering me and going too far, and they are not speaking in accordance with what I have said, are not preachers of the Dharma, are not expressing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma, and those who do not speak in accordance with what has been said, they agree with the Dharma of others, so there will be very many faults. Why is that? Village head, it is not permissible for monks to have obvious signs, and the renunciates, sons of the Shakya, possess gold, because for some it is permissible to have obvious signs and to possess gold, that is not the Dharma of a renunciate, and that is not the Dharma of the sons of the Shakya. Village head, I will tell you two or three times for that very reason, it is not permissible for monks to have obvious signs, and the sons of the Shakya

said, 'Ascetics should not possess gold. Whoever allows themselves to have obvious marks and possess gold, that is not the Dharma of an ascetic, nor is it the Dharma of the sons of the Shakya.' Today, I say this: 'For the sake of which venerable one did the Blessed One say that it is not permissible for monks to have obvious marks, and the ascetics who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold? Whoever allows themselves to have obvious marks and possess gold, that is not the Dharma of an ascetic, nor is it the Dharma of the sons of the Shakya.' How wonderful it is that the Blessed One has spoken so well! For the sake of which venerable one did the Blessed One say that, O village head, I will say to you for the sake of that meaning, two or three times: 'It is not permissible for monks to have obvious marks, and the ascetics who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold. Whoever allows themselves to have obvious marks and possess gold, that is not the Dharma of an ascetic, nor is it the Dharma of the sons of the Shakya.' How excellent is the teaching of the Blessed One! Venerable one, I also think this: 'It is not permissible for monks to have obvious marks, and the ascetics who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold. Whoever allows themselves to have obvious marks and possess gold, then for them, the five qualities of desire are also permissible.' I said to him, 'Village head, it is so! It is so! It is not permissible for monks to have obvious marks, and the ascetics who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold. Whoever allows themselves to have obvious marks and possess gold, that is not the Dharma of an ascetic, nor is it the Dharma of the sons of the Shakya.' Then, the village head Topknot Jewel was very pleased and rejoiced at what I said, bowed his head to my two feet, and then departed from me. Monks, in this way, the village head Topknot Jewel said in front of the retinue including the king, that it is not permissible for monks to have obvious marks, and the ascetics who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold.
