The eighteenth, showing the abandonment of touching gold and silver. The eighteenth, showing the abandonment of touching gold and silver. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was staying in the bamboo grove, the place of Kalandaka, in Rajagriha. Then the village chief Crest Jewel went to where the Bhagavan was, and having arrived, bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan and sat to one side. Having sat to one side, the village chief Crest Jewel said this to the Bhagavan: Venerable sir, in the past, umbrella makers, long ago, in the royal palace, when the king and the ministers were harmonious, they would often discuss such topics: Wise ones, is it permissible for monks to possess obvious marks? Do the ascetics, sons of the Shakya, own gold? Or, is it not permissible for monks to possess obvious marks, and do the ascetics, sons of the Shakya, not own gold? At that time, some said this: It is permissible for monks to possess obvious marks, and the ascetics, sons of the Shakya, own gold. Some said this: It is not permissible for monks to possess obvious marks, and the ascetics, sons of the Shakya, do not own gold. Venerable sir, regarding those who say that it is permissible for monks to possess obvious marks, and the ascetics, sons of the Shakya, own gold, venerable sir, if those who say that, express it in that way, would they not be slandering the Bhagavan, and would they not be going too far? And would they be speaking in accordance with what the Bhagavan has said, be speakers of the Dharma, be expressing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma, and following what has been said, would there not be any grounds for others to criticize those who speak in accordance with the Dharma because it is contrary to the Dharma? Village chief, if someone says that it is permissible for monks to possess obvious marks, and the ascetics, sons of the Shakya, own gold, when those people express it in that way, they are slandering me, and they are going too far, and those people are not speaking in accordance with what I have said, and are not speakers of the Dharma.

No, it is not, it is not conveying the Dharma teachings that are in accordance with the Dharma, and it is not repeating after what has been said. For those people, because they are in accordance with the Dharma, they are blamed by others, and such actions similar to faults will appear in large quantities. Why is that? Village chief, monks should not possess obvious signs, and practitioners who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold. Because whoever possesses obvious signs and possesses gold, that is not the Dharma of a monk, nor is it the Dharma of the sons of the Shakya. Village chief, I will repeat it to you two or three times for that very reason. Monks should not possess obvious signs, and practitioners who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold. Whoever possesses obvious signs and possesses gold, that is not the Dharma of a monk, nor is it the Dharma of the sons of the Shakya. Venerable one, for what reason did the Bhagavan say that monks should not possess obvious signs, and practitioners who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold? Whoever possesses obvious signs and possesses gold, is that not the Dharma of a monk, nor is it the Dharma of the sons of the Shakya? The Bhagavan has spoken so well, it is truly rare! Venerable one, for what reason did the Bhagavan say that, village chief, I will repeat it to you two or three times for that very reason. Monks should not possess obvious signs, and practitioners who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold. Whoever possesses obvious signs and possesses gold, is that not the Dharma of a monk, nor is it the Dharma of the sons of the Shakya? The Bhagavan's teachings are truly vast and wonderful! Venerable one, I also think this way, monks should not possess obvious signs, and practitioners who are sons of the Shakya should not possess gold. Whoever possesses obvious signs and possesses gold, then those five objects of desire are also permissible. Village chief, it is just so. It is just so, monks should not possess obvious signs, and practitioners who are sons of the Shakya

One should not claim land and gold as one's own. For anyone who has obvious signs and claims gold as one's own, that is not the Dharma of a Shramana, nor is it the Dharma of the sons of Shakya. Then, the village chief Crest Jewel was overjoyed and rejoiced at the words spoken by the Blessed One. He bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One and then departed from the presence of the Blessed One. At that time, the venerable Ananda was at the edge of the Blessed One's robe, holding a fan and fanning the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One, not long after the village chief Crest Jewel had left, thought in his heart and said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, go to the place of the Light Garden Kalandaka and gather all the monks who dwell there in dependence into the assembly hall. The venerable Ananda, hearing the Blessed One's teaching, replied: Blessed One, as you say. Then, he gathered all the monks who dwelt in dependence in the place of the Light Garden Kalandaka into the assembly hall, and then went to the place where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, bowed to the Blessed One's feet and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the venerable Ananda said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, all the monks who dwell in dependence in the place of the Light Garden Kalandaka have gathered in the assembly hall, and if the Blessed One deems the time has come, please know. Then, the Blessed One went to the place where the assembly hall was, and upon arriving, sat down on the seat that had been prepared in front of the Sangha of monks. Having sat down, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, just now the village chief Crest Jewel came to the place where I was, and upon arriving, bowed to my feet and sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the village chief Crest Jewel said this to me: Venerable one, in the earliest of the former canopies, in the king's palace, the king and the retinue of ministers gathered together, and they often said such words, wise ones, what monk?
