should be upheld. Monks, I shall establish the Dharma of conduct for the debating monks. The debating monk should sweep the ground with a worm-infested object, prepare the dwelling, strike the bell, and admonish the monks with questioning words. When the entire Sangha has gathered and is in harmony, the monks should debate with the swift-footed monk and Nabsopa. If harmony is not granted, then the disrespectful one should perform the act of expulsion from the dwelling. If harmony is granted, then they should be allowed to explain. If they do not explain, then the disrespectful one should perform the act of expulsion. If they explain, then they should debate. If they say they have not seen the transgression, then the disrespectful one should perform the act of expulsion. If they say they have seen the transgression, then they should say, 'Therefore, the Sangha has performed the act of expulsion on you two.' If the debating monk does not properly uphold and engage in the Dharma of the debater as established, it will become a grave offense. The venerable Ananda, having heard from the Blessed One, 'Venerable ones, as instructed,' went to Reda Mountain together with the elder monks, and sat down on the way and appointed a debating monk. Those reddish-robed monks who acted like the swift-footed monk and Nabsopa heard that the venerable Ananda, together with the elder monks, had come here and sat down on the way and appointed a debating monk, and would perform the act of expelling the swift-footed monk and Nabsopa. Having heard this, they thought to themselves: 'Whatever these two venerable ones have practiced, spoken, and acted, we have done nothing that we have not practiced, spoken, and acted. Therefore, if they perform the act of expulsion on these two, why would they not do it to us? When the venerable Ananda and the elder monks come here, first perform the act of expelling the swift-footed monk and Nabsopa, and then they will also perform the act of expulsion on us, there is a possibility of that happening.'

The earth deities, burdened by the heavy load of earth clods, paused to rest, placing the clods down and sitting. They thought: 'When the venerable Ananda and the elder monks enter through one gate, we, carrying these clods, will surely exit through the same gate and proceed to Shravasti.' Then, the preaching monk went to Red Mountain, prepared the dwelling, struck the ghanta, and with words of inquiry, admonished the monks. When the entire Sangha had gathered and was in harmony, the monks Gyomgok and Nabso gave their consent, explained the situation, and the preaching monk began to preach. The two said: 'Venerable ones, we have seen the transgression.' The preaching monk said: 'Precisely for that reason, the Sangha has performed the act of expulsion upon you both.' Then, when the venerable Ananda and the elder monks entered through one gate, those monks in crimson robes, carrying the loads of earth clods, emerged from the same gate and went to Shravasti. They confessed whatever transgressions needed to be confessed, restrained the various mental fabrications with mindfulness, dwelt together with the monks who abided in their own nature, and also protected the affairs of the Sangha. Then, the venerable Ananda and the elder monks, having performed the act of expulsion upon the monks Gyomgok and Nabso, went to where Shravasti was, gradually walking and proceeding until they reached Shravasti. Gyomgok and Nabso thought: 'Whoever falls to the ground rises by relying on the earth itself, so we two should also go to Shravasti and ask forgiveness from the Blessed One and the Sangha of monks.' So Gyomgok said: 'Nabso, whoever falls on the ground rises by relying on the earth itself, so we two should also go to Shravasti and ask forgiveness from the Blessed One and the Sangha of monks.' Nabso said: 'Do not fear, come back, let us go to ask forgiveness.' After the two had consulted, after that night had passed, in the morning they put on their lower robes and took their bowls.

Then, taking their robes, they went to Rede Ri (Re-lde ri) for alms. After begging for alms in Rede Ri (Re-lde ri), they did the work of eating, and when they returned from the later alms round, they chose a dwelling place to use, and taking their bowls and robes, they went to Kalawa in Shravasti (mnyan yod), gradually walking, and when they arrived in Shravasti (mnyan yod), the elder monks saw the two of them, but they did not speak to them or say welcome. The red and yellow monks also saw the two of them, but they did not speak to them or say welcome. Then, the fast-walking monk and Nabso (nab so) said to the red monks: Venerable ones, it is reasonable that the elder monks do not speak to us or say welcome, why do you not speak to us or say welcome? Of the things we have done, said, and acted, what have you not done, not said, and not acted? They said: Venerable ones, that is also true, but we have confessed the offenses that must be confessed, and we must also restrain the various kinds of mental discriminations with our minds. Now we live with those who have the nature of monks, and we also protect the activities of the Sangha, so we will not enjoy ourselves with those who practice evil deeds in the future. The two of them said: Venerable ones, here some monks act out of desire, act out of hatred, act out of ignorance, act out of fear, I am the master, like this, from similar offenses, some monks are expelled, and some monks are not expelled, and they began to ridicule. The monks said to the two of them: Venerable ones, who are you saying acts out of desire, acts out of hatred, acts out of ignorance, acts out of fear? Venerable ones, the venerable monk Ananda and the dwelling
