The twelfth, explaining the Sangha residue that abandons the laity. The twelfth, explaining the Sangha residue that abandons the laity. The Buddha Bhagavan was residing in Anāthapiṇḍika's Jetavanārātha in Śrāvastī. At that time, in Reṇu, there were monks Quick-Goer, Nabso two, and monks of reddish-yellow color, who abandoned the laity and practiced all sinful dharmas. They frolicked together with women, played everywhere, made noise everywhere, were arrogant, haughty, and coquettish. They sat on one seat, ate from one vessel, and drank various intoxicating drinks from one cup. They picked flowers, until they were all picked; strung garlands, until they were all strung; wore flower earrings, and had others wear them; beat drums, until they were all beaten; sang songs, until they were all sung; made the sound of musical instruments, until the sound of musical instruments was exhausted. They gave gifts born of flattery to those skilled in dancing, skilled in singing, and skilled in making the sound of musical instruments. They mocked the Dharma robes and ran, made offerings, and made supreme offerings. They turned their thighs, turned their arms, turned like fish, splashed in the water, beat the water like striking with a tail, made the sound of elephants, made the sound of horses, made the sound of bull kings, made the sound of peacocks, made the sound of cuckoos, made the sound of clay drums with their mouths, made the sound of conches with their mouths, made the sound of large drums with their mouths, and also made elephant postures, and also did them until the elephant postures were exhausted, horse postures, bull king postures, buffalo postures, ram postures, sheep postures, woman postures, man postures, young man postures, young woman postures, crow postures, hoopoe postures, and swan postures as well. They did them until they were exhausted, and they and other actions that are not those of a monk.

The things that are being done and being finished are all exhausted. Their way of acting, behavior, and evil practices cause that even future monks will not come to Relde Mountain, and even if they come, they will not be happy and will abandon the residence of Relde Mountain. The Brahmins and householders living in Relde Mountain are also unhappy and feel depressed, and for the resident monks, it is difficult to obtain alms and difficult to concentrate on doing things, let alone those who visit suddenly. At one time, the Venerable Ananda, while traveling in the country of Kashi, went to Relde Mountain and stayed in the forest of Relde Mountain. Then, the Venerable Ananda, in the morning, put on his lower garment, took his bowl and Dharma robes, and went to Relde Mountain to beg for alms. He went to Relde Mountain to beg for alms just like washing his bowl, and just like washing his bowl, he did not even receive a single offering, and returned without receiving any alms. Then, the Venerable Ananda thought to himself: Previously, Relde Mountain was a place of wealth, prosperity, happiness, abundance, and many people, and even beggars could easily obtain alms. Now, Relde Mountain is still a place of wealth, prosperity, happiness, abundance, and many people, but, I went to Relde Mountain to beg for alms just like washing my bowl, and just like washing my bowl, I did not even receive a single offering, and returned without receiving any alms. Could it be that here, among the disciples of the Buddha, there are some foolish, unclear, and unwise people who, being controlled by afflictions, have said something, done something, or touched something to the women of the village or the village, or the young women of the caste? At that time, in the assembly place of the Brahmins and householders of Relde Mountain, about five hundred Brahmins and householders gathered together for some matter and reached an agreement. Then, the Venerable Ananda to the Brahmins and householders of Relde Mountain

of the Having gone to the place where the leader was, he went and said to the Brahmins and householders of Reda Mountain: Wise ones, formerly this Reda Mountain was prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, had good harvests, and was filled with people and many people, and here it was easy for beggars to obtain alms. Now, even now, this Reda Mountain is prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, has good harvests, and is filled with people and many people, but, as for me, just by washing my bowl I entered Reda Mountain for alms, and just by washing my bowl I did not even receive the alms of a single beggar, nor did I receive any giving and returned. After saying this, the Brahmins and householders of Reda Mountain withdrew their senses and sat down. At that time, the lay follower Water Stream and his retinue were dwelling together in harmony. Then, the lay follower Water Stream, holding the hands of the venerable Ananda, led him to one side and said to the venerable Ananda: Venerable Ananda, please know that this Reda Mountain has monks who are quick to move, two Nabshos, monks in reddish-yellow robes who destroy families, monks who practice all evil dharmas. They rub against women, play together, make noise together, are arrogant, proud, and flaunt their bodies, sit together on one mat, use one vessel to hold food, and drink various intoxicating drinks from one cup, pick flowers, make others pick flowers, weave garlands, make others weave garlands, wear flower earrings, make others wear flower earrings, beat drums, make others beat drums, make sounds, make others make sounds, play music, make others play music, give favors out of courtesy to those who are skilled in dancing, skilled in singing, and skilled in playing music, put on robes and run, jump, and jump wildly.
