Thinking that they would use the monastic robes to make people not poor. Therefore, we went to Śrāvastī." The householder said, "Venerable ones, if you destroy my monastery, do you think that even the possessions I own in my house will be destroyed? Venerable ones, it is good that you have come for what purpose." That householder again treated them with great respect and offered each monk thirteen items. Those thieves came back and started knocking on the door of the monastery, and when the monks noticed, they said, "Long-lived ones, those deceitful ones have come, let's scare them together!" Strike the ghaṇṭā (Tibetan: གཎྜཱི།, Sanskrit: ghaṇṭā, Romanized Sanskrit: ghaṇṭā, literal meaning: bell). The hammer of the ghaṇṭā, the wheel of time, the saṃghāṭī, the seventh, the fifth, the box, the belt, the rope, the whip, the small rope, let's scare them together!" When they started to scare them, those deceitful ones were frightened and started to flee. The god spoke a verse: "Well spoken by the chief of the two-legged, the Buddha Śākyamuni (Sanskrit: Śākyamuni, Romanized Sanskrit: Śākyamuni, literal meaning: Sage of the Śākya clan), whatever scaring was taught to the śrāvakas (Sanskrit: Śrāvaka, Romanized Sanskrit: Śrāvaka, literal meaning: hearer), striving to scare is the most excellent, the deceitful ones cowardly wear armor on the battlefield, the five hundred are not like that." The one who knew the origin of those deceitful ones said, "Knowledgeable ones, why are you fleeing?" They said, "You said, 'The sixty ordained ones dwelling here are all lazy teachers.' How can we not flee? Moreover, we have never heard the names of such weapons as the ghaṇṭā." He said, "Those are not weapons." "Then what are they?" "First, the ghaṇṭā refers to the sound of striking. The hammer of the ghaṇṭā refers to what is used to strike. The wheel of time refers to what is used to measure time. The saṃghāṭī, the seventh, and the fifth refer to the names of the monastic robes. The box refers to where they are placed. The belt, the rope, the whip, and the small rope refer to the names of the belts. Do not be afraid, return and destroy them!" After saying that, those people

Again, the commander of the thieves' army erected a ladder and began to climb. There, an old man who had been placed in the mill saw the commander of the thieves' army climbing. The old man thought, "These cunning ones are the ones who robbed us of our alms bowls and robes, leaving us naked. If we let these people go, they will again rob us of our alms bowls and robes, leaving us naked, so we must threaten them." The old man slowly, little by little, went and threw a gandi at the head of the commander of the thieves. His head shattered, and he was struck violently, oppressed by feelings of pain, and fell down with great difficulty. After a while, he died. The old man shouted, "Thieves, thieves!" The monks stopped listening to the Dharma and climbed onto the roof, saying, "Where are those thieves?" The old man said, "They erected a ladder here and climbed, but I threatened them, and they ran away." The monks said, "If they ran away, that's good." They came down. When the night passed and dawn arrived, they began to inspect the surroundings of the temple, each in their own way. "Where is the place where those thieves climbed?" As they inspected, they saw blood. They followed the blood and saw the commander of the thieves' army killed. Having seen this, they were frightened by the fear of breaking their vows and began to say, "O venerable ones, we were defeated before, because we committed the transgression that led to defeat, and now we are defeated." When they felt remorse, they prayed to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, "Monks, you have no transgression. Furthermore, a monk should not throw with the intention of striking him, but should throw in this way, or throw backwards, and bluff in order to create intimidation. If a monk throws with the intention of striking him, it becomes a serious offense."
