Even sparrows would scatter them, saying, "May you be well!" Likewise, those beings, seeing beings engaging in misconduct, would also scatter them, throwing tiles, pebbles, gravel, and shards of tiles, saying, "Wicked beings, doing what should not be done! Wicked beings, doing what should not be done! Hey, beings, why do you make beings weary?" Monks, thus, what was formerly known as non-dharma is now known as dharma; what was formerly known as non-discipline is now known as discipline; what was formerly to be reproached is now to be praised. They would gather rice for only one day, or for two, three, or seven days. Because those beings were deeply fallen into sinful, unholy practices, they entered into asceticism, and so they began to build houses, saying, "We shall do here what should not be done! We shall do here what should not be done!" Thus, the name "house, house" arose. Monks, this is the very first beginning of all household work that arises in the world, and it is from dharma, not from non-dharma. That dharma is this: it is the supreme dharma of the victorious kings. They would go to collect rice because they wanted to eat in the afternoon, and they would go to collect rice because they wanted to eat in the morning. Then, a certain being, lazy by nature, took rice for both the afternoon and the next morning at once. One being said to that being, "Hey, being, come! Go to collect rice!" That being said, "Hey, being, you yourself think about collecting rice! I have already taken rice for both the afternoon and the next morning at once." Then, that being thought to himself, 'Alas, that is good! Alas, that is excellent! I should also collect rice for two days, three days, or seven days.' Thinking this, he collected rice for two days, three days, or seven days.

It became that way. Then, a sentient being said to those sentient beings: Hey, sentient beings, come here! Let's go for the rice. That sentient being said: Hey, sentient being, think about your own rice! I have already taken two days', three days' and seven days' worth of rice. Then, that sentient being thought: Alas, that is very good! Alas, that is wonderful! I will also take half a month's and a month's worth of rice, thinking thus, he took half a month's and a month's worth of rice. Because those sentient beings ate by fully enjoying the storage of uncultivated rice grains, therefore that rice was completely covered with chaff, husks and rice, and after being harvested, it did not grow again, and harvesting also became obvious, and the rice existed in both whole and non-whole states. Then, those sentient beings gathered together and began to grieve, become discouraged, wail, and said: Wise ones, we were previously with form, born from thought, without incompleteness, with faculties not diminished, possessing all limbs and minor limbs, beautiful, possessing splendor, self-illuminating, walking in the sky, eating joy, possessing food of joy, long-lived and dwelling for a long time. We had the essence of the earth, possessing perfect color, perfect fragrance, perfect taste. Because we ate the essence of the earth as the source of a mouthful of food, therefore our bodies became hard and heavy, and the good, clear color that we had disappeared, and darkness also appeared in the world. We were eating it, possessing that food, long-lived and dwelling for a long time, but among us, the one who ate the least food would become radiant, and the one who ate the most food would become without radiance. Thus, relying solely on two kinds of food, two kinds of radiance appeared, and when it became two kinds of radiance, a sentient being would say to another sentient being: Hey, sentient being, I am radiant, and you are without radiance, and thus they would despise each other. We are manifest by radiance.

When we become arrogant, due to thoroughly accepting sinful, unwholesome dharmas, the essence of the earth disappears. When the essence of the earth disappears, earth-oil appears, perfect in color, perfect in smell, and perfect in taste. We eat it, possess this food, and live long and endure for a long time. Among us, whoever eats the least food becomes beautiful in color, and whoever eats the most food becomes ugly in color. Thus, relying on two kinds of food, two kinds of colors appear. When two kinds of colors appear, beings say to each other: 'Hey, beings, I am beautiful in color, and you are ugly in color.' Thus, they belittle each other. When we become arrogant due to color, due to thoroughly accepting sinful, unwholesome dharmas, the sprouts disappear. When the sprouts disappear, uncultivated and unsown rice appears, grains of Sālu rice, without chaff, without husks, clean and pure, four fingers long, completely unwound, growing in the morning when harvested in the evening, growing in the evening when harvested in the morning, growing immediately after being harvested, and not even appearing to have been harvested. We eat it, possess this food, and live long and endure for a long time. Because we consumed the uncultivated and unsown rice, grains of Sālu rice, by using it for accumulation and storage, therefore we have rice.
