Plays with music, rejoices, enjoys happiness. I should also take and abide in a small portion of virtue, what kind of virtue should I take and abide in? I should shave my hair and beard, wear robes, and only with true faith, go forth from home to homelessness. He decided in this way, shaved his hair and beard, wore robes, and only with true faith, went forth from home to homelessness, and as long as he lived, he abandoned killing and turned away from killing. Not taking what is not given, not engaging in unchaste conduct, not speaking falsely, not engaging in divisive speech, not speaking harsh words, not engaging in idle chatter, abandoning greed, malice, and wrong views, turning away from wrong views, and possessing right views. Your people who live on chaff saw him wandering in the fields. Having seen him, they thought: This is the son of a wonderful body, the householder of King Ajatasatru of Magadha, the farmer, the one who increases the treasury. He shaved his hair and beard, wore robes, and only with true faith, went forth from home to homelessness. As long as he lived, he abandoned killing and turned away from killing, not taking what is not given, not engaging in unchaste conduct, not speaking falsely, not engaging in divisive speech, not speaking harsh words, not engaging in idle chatter, abandoning greed, malice, and wrong views, turning away from wrong views, and possessing right views. Let us go to the king and inform him. They came to you and said: May the gods know, there is a householder of the gods, a farmer, one who increases the king's treasury, he shaved his hair and beard, wore robes, and only with true faith, went forth from home to homelessness, and as long as he lived, he abandoned killing and turned away from killing. Turning away from killing, not taking what is not given, not engaging in unchaste conduct, not speaking falsely, not engaging in divisive speech, not speaking harsh words, not engaging in idle chatter, abandoning greed, malice, and wrong views, turning away from wrong views.

Returning, if he says that he has the right view, what do you think, great king? If someone says to you, 'Wise ones, bring that man here now, and he will again be my farmer, increase production, increase the king's wealth,' would you say that? No, venerable sir. Furthermore, I would go to see him, because he used to speak to me openly, pay homage, stand up, join his palms, bow, and do those things, so I would do those things for him, and as long as he lives, I would provide him with these things: robes, food, lodging, the cause of illness, and the equipment of medicine. What do you think, great king? If that is the case, haven't I shown the fruit of a practitioner with right view? No, venerable sir. The Blessed One has shown the fruit of a practitioner with right view. Great king, I ask you, the teacher, the Thus Come One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Well-Gone, the Knower of the World, the Unsurpassed Trainer of Persons, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, has appeared in the world. The Dharma he teaches is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with good meaning, good words, unmixed, completely perfect, completely pure, completely white, thoroughly proclaiming the Brahmachariya. That Dharma is heard by a householder or a householder's son. Having heard that Dharma, he seeks purity in order to abandon these three things, namely, the Dharma of attachment, the Dharma of hatred, and the Dharma of ignorance. If this venerable one is overcome by attachment and pervades his mind, he will say that he does not know, does not understand, and will say that he has not seen, has not perceived. For others, is there attachment that causes harm for a long time, is not beneficial, and leads to suffering, attachment that he has not abandoned, has not fully understood, has not prevented, and has not eliminated? Or, if this venerable one is overcome by attachment and pervades his mind, he will say that he does not know, does not understand.
