This is the doing of Devadatta. He separated King Ajatashatru from his family, youth, and ministers, and possessed him alone, thinking, 'I have become so isolated and helpless now.' Then, he said to Utpalavarna (the name of the bhikkhuni): 'What wrong have I done to you, that you make me stay away from the house of alms?' Having said that, he started to beat her, and as he beat her, she spoke slowly, word by word, in a pitiful voice: 'The noble ones are intolerable, are you going to treat me like that, one who has renounced the world from the Shakya clan of the Blessed One? I have not done that, please be patient.' Even though she said that, Devadatta hit her head with his fist. She felt endangered by the pain of the vital point, blessed this life's activity, gave up the activity of life, stayed in diligence, and went to the summer retreat of the bhikkhunis. The bhikkhunis saw her like that and asked: 'Holy one, what happened?' She said: 'Sisters, all conditioned things are impermanent, all dharmas are without self, Nirvana is peaceful, so you should be mindful of virtuous dharmas.' Devadatta committed the third of the five heinous crimes, and will completely pass away from suffering. After that, in front of the bhikkhuni sangha, he performed various kinds of miracles and completely entered the realm of nirvana without remainder. The monks became doubtful, and in order to cut off all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: 'Venerable Devadatta saw the bhikkhuni Utpalavarna speaking in a pitiful voice, and struck and killed her with his fist.' The Blessed One taught: 'Monks, not only now, but in the past he also killed and ate her while she was wailing in a pitiful voice. Monks, in the past there lived a householder in a place called Riwo, and his shepherd came from the city to the outskirts to graze the flock of sheep. After grazing, at the time of sunset, he began to pass through the Riwo area, and there

An old ewe was wandering outside when a wolf caught her and said: Old mother, are you well? Old mother, have you become like that? Old mother, alone in the monastery, is everything alright? The old ewe also said: Have you stepped on my tail? The hair on the tail has also been plucked out, and you still call me old mother, do you hope the sheep can escape? The old ewe also said: If your tail is not damaged, if I come from in front of you, by what means could I step on your tail? The wolf also said: This Jambudvipa with the ocean, with all the mountains, if my tail is everywhere, where did you come from? The old ewe said: Kind one, your tail is in all places, I heard it from relatives long ago, it came from the sky. The wolf said: Old mother, did you come from the sky today? You drove away my food, my herd of beasts. While it was saying this, the sinful fellow pounced, cut off the sheep's head, killed it, and ate its meat. Monks, what do you think? The wolf at that time was Devadatta. The old ewe at that time was the bhikkhuni Utpalavarna, and she was killed wailing pitifully like that at that time. Now she is also being killed wailing pitifully like that. Afterwards, Devadatta thought: I have suppressed the Blessed One many times, and have committed three heinous crimes. Throwing a stone at the Blessed One, causing the Buddha to bleed, this is the first heinous crime. Dividing the Sangha is the second. Killing Utpalavarna is the third. Not only have I not attained omniscience, but I have not achieved any other purpose. Now there is no other way, I can only fall into the hells of sentient beings. Thinking this, he rested his hand on his cheek and fell into contemplation. After a while, the Perfecter went to him and said: Devadatta, why are you resting your hand on your cheek and lost in thought?
