Having become one, having become unified, experiencing the knowledge of appearing and not appearing, and going directly through walls, also going directly through mountains, also going directly through fences, walking without obstruction by the body, just like a bird in the sky. Also appearing above the earth and diving like a bird, just like in water. Also going against the current in water, just like on land. Also going in the sky in a lotus posture, just like a winged bird. Even grasping and caressing these two, the moon and the sun, which are so miraculous and so powerful, with the hand, and even ruling with the body up to the world of Brahma. Great king, what do you think? If so, have I not shown the fruit of the ascetic's conduct that is truly seen? Venerable sir, indeed, the Blessed One has shown the fruit of the ascetic's conduct that is truly seen. Thus, when the mind that is equally placed is completely pure, completely purified, without defilements, free from near defilements, upright, fit for use, having attained immovability, one directs the mind towards the manifestation of the supernormal knowledge of divine hearing. With that divine ear, which is pure and transcends the human, one hears both the sounds of humans or non-humans, whether they are far or near. For example, if a person blowing a conch shell climbs onto a large rocky mountain and blows the conch shell at night or midnight, that sound will spread unobstructed in different directions. Similarly, when the mind that is equally placed is completely pure, completely purified, without defilements, free from near defilements, upright, fit for use, having attained immovability, one directs the mind towards the manifestation of the supernormal knowledge of divine hearing. With that divine ear, which is pure and transcends the human, one hears both the sounds of humans or non-humans, whether they are far or near. Great king, what do you think? Isn't this a demonstration of the fruit of the ascetic practice of seeing? Venerable one, yes. If so, then the Blessed One has demonstrated the fruit of the ascetic practice of seeing. Thus, when the mind of equipoise is completely purified, completely cleansed, without afflictions, free from near afflictions, upright, abiding in suitability, having attained immovability, he directs his mind towards the direct knowledge for the purpose of directly knowing the types of mind, and with his mind, he thoroughly knows the thoughts and discriminating minds of other sentient beings and other individuals as they are. That is, he thoroughly knows, as it is, that a mind with desire is a mind with desire. He thoroughly knows, as it is, that a mind without desire is a mind without desire. And with a mind with hatred and a mind without hatred, a mind with delusion and a mind without delusion, collected and scattered, timid and extremely attached, agitated and not agitated, near pacified and not near pacified, in equipoise and not in equipoise, cultivated and not cultivated, he thoroughly knows, as it is, that a mind that is not liberated is a mind that is not liberated. He thoroughly knows, as it is, that a mind that is completely liberated is a mind that is completely liberated. For example, just as a person with eyes takes a very clean mirror and observes the characteristics of his own face, so too, when the mind of equipoise is completely purified, completely cleansed, without afflictions, free from near afflictions, upright, abiding in suitability, having attained immovability, he directs his mind towards the direct knowledge for the purpose of directly knowing the types of mind, and with his mind, he thoroughly knows the thoughts and discriminating minds of other sentient beings and other individuals as they are.
