And, endowed with mindfulness and supreme knowledge, he experiences the inner, blameless bliss. He is endowed with that aggregate of noble morality, and having guarded the doors of the senses, and endowed with mindfulness and supreme knowledge, he dwells in secluded places, in temples, under trees, and in empty rooms. Whether he dwells in a temple, or dwells under a tree, or dwells in an empty room, he sits down, sits cross-legged, straightens his body, and establishes mindfulness before him. He abandons covetousness for the world, dwells often with a mind free from covetousness, and completely purifies covetousness. Abandoning malice, sloth, sleep, agitation, regret, and doubt for the world, he transcends twofoldness of mind. He transcends doubt and hesitation, and completely purifies doubt about virtuous things. Great king, for example, a man borrows a debt, and then strives to cultivate the fields. All his work is not wasted and is completed, and then he repays the debt, and also has enough property to support his wife. He thinks: I borrowed a debt, and then strove to cultivate the fields. All my work was not wasted and was completed, and then I repaid the debt, and I also have enough property to support my wife. He becomes happy because of that basis, and his mind becomes happy. Or, for example, a man is sick, severely ill, and suffering. He cannot digest food when he eats it, and drinking water is harmful to his body. Later, at another time, he becomes healthy and strong. He thinks: I was previously sick, severely ill, and suffering. I could not digest food when I ate it, and drinking water was harmful to my body. But now I am healthy and strong, so I am happy. I can digest food when I eat it, and drinking water is not harmful to my body. He becomes filled with definite joy and great joy because of that basis. Or, for example, a man becomes a slave, forced to do various tasks, without freedom.

At another time, one becomes free from being a slave, not being ordered about, not doing hard labor, not cooking meals. Having freedom, one thinks, "When I was previously a slave, I was ordered about, did hard labor, cooked meals, and had no freedom. Now that I am not a slave, I am not ordered about, do not do hard labor, do not cook meals, and have freedom." He becomes happy because of that, and his mind becomes happy. For example, a person is imprisoned and tightly bound in shackles. Having escaped from that without any cost, he is happily and well liberated. He thinks, "I was previously imprisoned and tightly bound in shackles. Now that I have escaped from that without any cost, I am happily and well liberated." He becomes happy because of that, and his mind becomes happy. For example, a person finds peace from fear and changes from a bad year to a good year. He thinks, "I have found peace from fear and have changed from a bad year to a good year." He becomes happy because of that, and his mind becomes happy. Similarly, that great king truly and as it is, like a debt, like an interior, like a slave, like a prisoner, and like destruction, abandons these five hindrances of his own and truly sees them accordingly. Having abandoned those five hindrances that cause mental affliction, weaken wisdom, are in accordance with the unfavorable side, and do not lead to nirvana, he is secluded from desires and secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas. With thought and examination, he dwells, having perfected the first dhyana, which is born of seclusion and is filled with joy and pleasure. He manifestly drenches, completely drenches, completely satisfies, and completely pervades that very body with the joy and pleasure born of seclusion, so that there is not even a little bit of his entire body that is not pervaded or has not become pervaded by the joy and pleasure born of seclusion. For example, a skilled bath attendant or a skilled disciple of a bath attendant pours fine bath powder into a bowl, basin, or fish skin, wets it with water, and rubs it, then the bath powder.

The pill is moist, clinging because of the moisture, and pervading inside and out because of the moisture, so it will not spill or drip. Similarly, he manifestly moistens his body with the joy and pleasure born of solitude, completely moistens it, completely fills it, and completely pervades it. His entire body is like this: there is not even a little that is not pervaded or has not been pervaded by the joy and pleasure born of solitude. Great King, what do you think? If so, have I not shown the fruit of the ascetic path that is seen as it is? Venerable one, yes. If so, the Blessed One has shown the fruit of the ascetic path that is seen as it is. He dwells having perfected the second dhyana, which is free from reasoning and investigation, inwardly clear, with a unification of mind, without thought, without investigation, and with joy and pleasure born of concentration. He manifestly moistens his body with the joy and pleasure born of concentration, completely moistens it, and completely pervades it. His entire body is like this: there is not even a little that is not pervaded or has not been pervaded by the joy and pleasure born of concentration. For example, suppose there is a naturally formed pond on one side of a mountain peak, and no water flows there from the east, nor from the south, nor from the west, nor does water flow from the north, and even the gods do not constantly send down rain, but rather, from that naturally formed pond itself, or from a large naturally formed ditch, the natural water that flows out fills that entire naturally formed pond with cool water, completely fills it, very much fills it, and completely pervades it. That entire naturally formed pond is like this: there is not even a little that is not pervaded or has not been pervaded by cool water. Similarly, he manifestly moistens his body with the joy and pleasure born of concentration, completely moistens it, completely fills it, and completely nourishes it. His entire body is like this: there is not even a little that is not pervaded or has not been pervaded by the joy and pleasure born of concentration.
