Then they summoned the diviners and soothsayers. The Shakyas, adorned with necklaces, bracelets, armlets, and ornaments, looked at their fathers and mothers, and each mounted their chariots and began to set out. When the Shakyas' king, Bhadra, appeared with a mole on his nose, the soothsayers saw it and said, "After a while, this one will be pleased." Similarly, when the ship and the uninterrupted one, and so on, appeared, the soothsayers also made predictions. Then, Devadatta came out, and as he came out, a crow snatched the jewel from his crest. The soothsayers saw this and said, "If this sign is connected, he will cling to the doctrine of not eating demons and will eventually fall into hell." When Kokālika, Khaṇḍasākiduṃdudrabyā, Kaṭamora, Katiśya, and Samudradatta came out, the sound of a donkey was heard, and the soothsayers also predicted, "These ones will also fall into hell after speaking evil words to the great hearers." Nanda, riding an elephant, looked at each other, and a pearl necklace fell off, and he got off the elephant and picked it up. The soothsayers also predicted, "This one, because he is too greedy, will be born in the hells of sentient beings." Then, Bhadra, the ship, the uninterrupted one, and Devadatta, and so on, the five hundred Shakyas, as if going to a festival in a pleasure garden, Bhadra leading the way, went to where the Blessed One was. The Blessed One thought, "If I ordain these Shakyas by saying 'Come, monks,' some will be pleased, and some will not be pleased. Those who are not pleased will think otherwise. 'Come, monks' means that everything is the last existence." Thinking this, the Blessed One thought, "I should have all of them ordained and fully ordained by the monks' request and the four karmas." Then, the Blessed One said to the monks, "Monks, let the Shakyas of Kapilavastu be ordained and fully ordained by request and the four karmas!" The monks replied, "Venerable One, according to your command." Then, those monks

Thus have I heard. King Suddhodana sent the barber of the Shakyas, named Near Attendant, to shave them when they were being ordained. When he shaved the hair of the Shakya king Good Guardian, he turned black in the face, shed tears, wailed, and gasped for breath as he shaved. The Shakya king Good Guardian said: "Near Attendant, why is this?" He spoke with a compassionate voice, lowering his voice, slowly saying each word: "O god, serving the chief men of Jambudvipa, one should also serve ordinary people! It is better to die than to live after you have renounced." The Shakya king Good Guardian said: "Near Attendant, you have already shown your affection and joy to the master, enough, do not grieve! I will act in such a way that I will not serve ordinary people." Having said this, he spread out a cloth and said to the Shakya youths: "Listen, wise youths! This barber Near Attendant has shown us respect, and we will no longer remain in our homes. Place the ornaments on the cloth as a means of his livelihood!" They piled up on the cloth a great heap of special ornaments adorned with various jewels, such as rings, necklaces, neck ornaments, bracelets, armlets, and earrings. Near Attendant gradually shaved them all, and as they went to bathe, he thought: "For a while, these youths, born of noble families, wealthy, youthful, with wives, and rich in treasuries and storehouses, have renounced and become ordained. It is not proper for me to be attached to these ornaments, for it will cause suffering. If I had not been born into a low caste, I too should be ordained in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and strive and exert myself to cross the river and completely pass beyond bondage!" This is the nature of Dharma, just as the Buddhas, the Bhagavat (Lord), look upon the world three times during the day and three times during the night with their Buddha-eyes, so do the great Shravakas.

Then, the Venerable Śāriputra saw the barber Neye-ba-'khor particularly sad. Having seen this, he went to where the barber Neye-ba-'khor was, and having arrived, he said these words to the barber Neye-ba-'khor: "Neye-ba-'khor, why are you so unhappy, holding your hand to your cheek, sitting there with your mind sunk in sorrow?" Neye-ba-'khor said: "Venerable Śāriputra, why is it that these young men, who now possess lineage, wealth, and youth, and have wives, and are rich with treasuries and storehouses, renounce all this and go forth? If I were attached to even this small amount of adornment, it would be improper and would cause suffering. If I had not been born into a low caste, I too would go forth into the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and would strive and exert myself to cross the river and to completely pass beyond bondage. Why would I not be sunk in sorrow?" The Venerable Śāriputra said: "In the teachings of the Well-Gone, the Powerful One, lineage is not the essence, clan is not the essence, descent is not the essence, learning is not the essence. For in the teachings of the Powerful One, practice is the essence. The Thus-Gone Ones do not discriminate by lineage and, clan and class. They discriminate only with regard to deeds that have been done long ago. If you wish to go forth and take full ordination in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and become a bhikṣu, then come to the presence of the Blessed One, and the Blessed One will cause you to go forth.". The Vinaya-vastu, ninety-second fascicle. He agreed to it. Then, the Venerable Śāriputra, taking the barber Neye-ba-'khor, went to where the Blessed One was, and having gone, he bowed his head to the two feet of the Blessed One, and spoke thus to the Blessed One: "Venerable One, this Neye-ba-'khor wishes to go forth and take full ordination in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, and become a bhikṣu, so please take him with compassion, and may the Blessed One cause him to go forth and take full ordination." The Blessed One spoke to him
