In accordance with the Dharma, namely, a person not in accordance with the Dharma; the Sangha in accordance with the Dharma, namely, two persons not in accordance with the Dharma; the Sangha in accordance with the Dharma, namely, many persons not in accordance with the Dharma; the Sangha in accordance with the Dharma, namely, the Sangha not in accordance with the Dharma. These are the sixteen givings suitable for subduing manifestly through the Dharma. Monks, thus it is that what is suitable for manifest subduing is the pacification of disputes. Thus it is that here some people's disputes are like this: by pacifying disputes suitable for manifest subduing, they are tamed, pacified, and nearly pacified. Monks, how is it that what is suitable for seeking its own nature is the pacification of disputes? How is it that here some people's disputes are like this: by pacifying disputes suitable for seeking its own nature, they are tamed, pacified, and nearly pacified? It is like this: the monk Mewazhi (མེ་བཞི་) in the Sangha, due to forgetting an offense, after forgetting, then remembering, from knowing, then again forgetting, in that instance, the monks requested the Bhagavan, and the Bhagavan spoke: Monks, you give the monk Mewazhi, and anyone else similar to him, to one suitable for seeking his own nature. The giving is to be done like this: prepare a place, strike the ghanta, and with words of inquiry, truly admonish the monks, and after the entire Sangha has gathered and become harmonious, the monk Mewazhi bares one shoulder, squats behind the elders, joins his palms, and requests one suitable for seeking his own nature, saying: Venerable Sangha, please listen. I, the monk Mewazhi, in the Sangha, abandoned an offense, after abandoning, then remembering, after seeking, then again abandoning, I request the Sangha for one suitable for seeking my own nature. Venerable Sangha, please be compassionate, holding compassion near, please grant me, the monk Mewazhi, one suitable for seeking his own nature. This should be said twice, three times. After that, one monk should make the request and perform the action. Venerable Sangha, please listen.
