Therefore, his body became gray, emaciated, thin, weak, and weakened by illness. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, cultivate knowingly; they cultivate knowingly, and do not cultivate unknowingly. They cultivate in due season, and do not cultivate out of season. They cultivate in accordance with meaning, and do not cultivate in accordance with meaning. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, prevent cultivation that is not in accordance with meaning with a water dragon. Therefore, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, knowing the time for cultivating things that are in accordance with meaning, the Buddha, the Bhagavat, said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, why has the body of the monk Neye-wa-khor become gray, emaciated, thin, weak, and weakened by illness? He replied: The Bhagavat praised the Vinaya, and the elder monks, having heard this, joyfully began to recite the Vinaya. The venerable Neye-wa-khor thought that the elder monks would fully understand the Vinaya, and respectfully began to teach it. Therefore, his body became gray, emaciated, thin, weak, and weakened by excessive labor. To this, the Bhagavat said: Monks, I shall establish the common conduct of the monk who upholds the Vinaya. The monk who upholds the Vinaya should uphold the Vinaya in four kinds of conduct: walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. The monk who upholds the Vinaya should uphold the Vinaya in three ways: If the monk who upholds the Vinaya comes to the place where the monk who upholds the Vinaya is walking, if he is a new monk, he should bow, ask if he is well, then bend down, and with an upright mind and respectful attitude, walk carefully and uphold the Vinaya. If he is an older monk, he should ask if he is well, then bend down, and with an upright mind and respectful attitude, walk carefully and uphold the Vinaya. If he comes while standing, if he is a new monk, he should bow, ask if he is well, then squat on the lowest seat, and with an upright mind and respectful attitude, uphold the Vinaya.

It should be done. If it is an elder bhikkhu, ask him if he is well, then bow down and accept the precepts with an upright heart and respect. Standing should be like sitting, and lying down should be the same. The bhikkhu who gives the precepts should be very familiar, well-versed, and without doubt, and then give the precepts. The one who receives the precepts should also be very familiar, very well-versed, and without doubt, and then receive the precepts. The bhikkhu who gives the precepts and the bhikkhu who receives the precepts should correctly uphold all the practices as prescribed, and if they do not practice them, they will commit a serious offense. When the six groups of bhikkhus were traveling in the countryside, they went to a monastery one night, and those bhikkhus let me in as if I were a companion, and they said, 'Venerable ones, what are you doing? Call the person in charge of assigning beds.' Those people said, 'What do you need him for? The beds have already been assigned.' They said, 'There are beds, sleep well, and assign them tomorrow morning.' Those people pestered them in every way, saying, 'Do you want to let the Dharma decline while the teacher is still alive? If you have offerings, assign the beds according to seniority.' Because those people were eloquent, the person in charge of assigning beds was afraid and assigned the beds, and the six groups of bhikkhus accepted the beds like elders and lay down to sleep. While the younger bhikkhus were still assigning beds, it dawned. The six groups of bhikkhus got up quickly and said, 'Venerable ones, pack up the beds, we are leaving.' Those bhikkhus said, 'Venerable ones, for your one night's stay, do you want to make the entire bhikkhu sangha stand all night? Alas, stay here.' Those people said, 'Friends, we are going to Shravasti.' They said, 'These people are wind disease patients.' When they left, those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said in response to this matter, 'Bhikkhus, therefore, beds should not be assigned at night. If you arrive at night, you should let them rest individually as if they were companions.'

Should be done. A monk from a certain place came to Shravasti to pay homage to the stupa. Because he was not familiar with the customs there, he got up early in the morning and went before the Blessed One. He prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One and the elder monks, and then went to Shravasti for alms. As he was begging for alms, it was approaching noon, so he sat down next to a fence and began to eat. The householder Anathapindika was also paying homage to the stupa and was passing by on that road. He saw the monk and said, "Venerable one, if you are fully ordained in the all-beautiful Dharma, how can you do such an improper thing?" The monk said, "Blessed one, haven't you seen that it is almost noon? What is improper about this?" The householder said, "Why don't you come to my house? What is your name?" The monk said, "I have heard of the householder Anathapindika in those sutras, but I do not know you, nor do I know your house." The householder Anathapindika thought, "This monk has come from afar and is not familiar with the situation. I am afraid he does not know me, nor does he know my house. What should I do in this situation? I should ask the Blessed One to build residences from Shravasti to Jetavana." So he went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, he prostrated with his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and then sat to one side. After sitting to one side, the householder Anathapindika said to the Blessed One, "A strange monk who is not familiar with the customs, while begging for alms, is approaching noon and is making use of borrowed food next to a fence. Unbelievers will use this as a reason to slander the noble ones. If the Blessed One allows, I will build residences from Shravasti to Jetavana, so that whoever is approaching noon wherever they are, they can enjoy alms there." The Blessed One instructed, "Householder, since that is the case, I allow you to build them." He whatever
