Explanation of the Basis of Disputes. Explanation of the Basis of Disputes. Summary: Fighting, the passing of the sick, the time of night, and Kāśī, trees and grass mats, dwelling places, divisions, and instructions. The Blessed One Buddha was asked by the venerable Ānanda: "Thus, monks engage in disputes, reveal faults, argue, debate, and create the basis for disputes. Hearing that they are shameless and, for the sake of a trifle, speak to us, remember, and think, how should they deal with them?" Ānanda! When the resident monks hear that monks are fighting, they should appoint three dwelling places and take six dwelling places. What are the three appointed dwelling places? Winter, spring, and summer. What are the six taken dwelling places? All monasteries, all the vicinity of monasteries, all small rooms, all the vicinity of small rooms, all gardens, and all the vicinity of gardens should be appointed. If they say, "Appoint a monastery," they should say, "This has already been appointed." If they say, "Appoint the vicinity of a monastery," this has also been appointed. If they say, "Appoint a small room," this has also been appointed. If they say, "Appoint the vicinity of a small room," this has also been appointed. If they say, "Appoint a garden," this has also been appointed. If they say, "Appoint the vicinity of a garden," this has also been appointed. They should say. If they are homeless and do not dwell, where will they generate faults? Then there are no accusers, no opponents, and no unfriendly people. After that, dwelling places should be appointed according to seniority, as with elders. The Blessed One said, "Dwelling places should be appointed according to seniority, as with elders." How many times, when there is a sick monk, a very old monk comes and appoints his dwelling place according to seniority, as with elders, and he is the youngest of all, and he has not obtained another dwelling place. That monk said to him, "Venerable one! This dwelling place has been appointed as mine, please come." He said

pa. I haven't recovered because I'm vomiting. That monk was very rude, he drove me away and placed me wherever he pleased. How many Brahmins and householders wanted to visit the temple, they saw that monk, and they said: 'Holy ones, is this monk dead?' Good people, he is not dead. 'Then why put him here?' An older monk than him came, designated this room as his, then he drove me away and put me here. 'Holy ones, we are householders, and we wouldn't drive patients out of our homes to take care of them, you are ordained, and the teacher is also compassionate, how can you drive patients out?' They began to scold, mock, and slander. At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said in response to this incident: 'Monks, therefore, lodging should be given to a sick monk.' After the Blessed One said, 'Lodging should be given to a sick monk,' the venerable Near Dweller bowed and sat in silence. After six or seven days, when the lodging was being distributed, he pretended to have a foot injury, wrapped it in cloth, and sat down. The monks who were distributing the lodging thought he was sick and assigned him lodging. After he was assigned lodging, he did not discard the bandage on the wound. The monks who were caring for the sick asked him: 'Venerable, has your foot ailment healed?' He said: 'Didn't the Blessed One say that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent? Will my illness be permanent?' They said: 'Venerable, if you recover quickly, don't pretend to be sick anymore.' He said: 'Do you want to put me at the door of the room?' Those monks with few desires began to scold, mock, and slander: 'Monks, like this, pretending to be sick to occupy lodging, what kind of talk is this?' At that time, the monks reported to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said in response to this incident: 'Monks, therefore, lodging should not be given to a patient who is pretending to be sick.'
