Unseen. Not seen among animals, pretas, humans, the retinue of the Four Great Kings, and the Thirty-three. Thus, the knowledge of the gods is entered downwards, not upwards. Vinaya-vastu, Volume 40. Then the lord of the gods, Indra, went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he requested the Blessed One with a verse: O Kasyapa, great being, when wandering for alms, where does that woman who offered the rice gruel in the pot rejoice? The Blessed One replied: Those gods called Tushita, all desires are fulfilled; O Kasyapa, that woman who offered the rice gruel in the pot rejoices there. Then the lord of the gods, Indra, thought to himself: For the time being, these people, although they do not directly see merit, still give alms and perform meritorious deeds. Since I directly see merit and abide in the fruit of my own merit, why should I not give alms and not perform meritorious deeds? Having thought thus, the great Kasyapa is compassionate towards the afflicted, the helpless, the poor, and the destitute. I shall urge him to beg for alms, so thinking, in the street of the poor, he transformed himself into a very unsightly figure living in a dilapidated house with many holes. He himself transformed into a person with disheveled hair, wearing a lower garment of coarse cloth, with scabies on his hands and feet, and began to weave cloth. The goddess Sudharma and others also transformed into the appearance of a weaver's wife and began to spin thread. On one side of it, a divine meal was prepared and set aside. Then the venerable great Kasyapa, out of compassion for the afflicted, the helpless, and the poor, gradually went to that house, and holding his bowl, stood at the door, thinking, 'This is an afflicted person.' The lord of the gods, Indra, filled his bowl with divine food. Then the venerable great Kasyapa thought, 'This food is the nectar of the gods, but the poverty of this house is very inconsistent with this.' Doubt arose in my heart, this is the nature of things.

The Arhats, because they cannot see wisdom without thinking, enter into contemplation. After some time, seeing that it was the lord of the gods, Indra, he said: Kauśika! Thus, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha has already uprooted the thorn of doubt and hesitation that has accompanied you for a long time, why do you create obstacles of suffering for beings? Great Venerable Kashyapa, why do you create obstacles of suffering for beings? For the time being, although these people do not directly see merit, they still give alms. If they do merit, I directly see merit and abide in the fruit of my own merit, why not give alms? Why not do merit? The Blessed One also said: Merit should be done, not doing merit turns into suffering, by doing merit, both this world and the next are happy. Didn't he say that? From then on, the venerable Kashyapa, after thinking, began to go begging in the houses. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, sitting in the sky, filled the venerable Kashyapa's bowl with heavenly food. The venerable Kashyapa turned the bowl upside down, and the food and drink were poured out. At that time, the monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed: Therefore, it is permitted to carry a bowl cover. A certain village woman named so-and-so offered rice porridge to the venerable Kashyapa, and she was reborn among the Tushita gods, this news spread everywhere. King Prasenajit of Kosala heard that a certain village woman named so-and-so offered rice porridge to the venerable Kashyapa, and she was reborn among the Tushita gods. After hearing this, he went to where the Blessed One was, and upon arriving, he bowed to the Blessed One's feet with his head, and then sat to one side. After sitting to one side, the Blessed One, with talk in accordance with the Dharma, gave correct instructions to King Prasenajit of Kosala, causing him to understand correctly.

From "doing" onwards, up to "truly rejoicing and remaining silent," it is the same as before. Then, King Pasenadi of Kosala rose from his seat, bared one shoulder of his upper garment, and pressed the kneecap of his right knee into the ground. He bowed with joined palms towards where the Blessed One was, and said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, for the sake of the great venerable Mahakasyapa, if I were to continuously provide umbrellas and food for seven years, please grant me permission." The Blessed One remained silent to King Pasenadi of Kosala, indicating permission. Then, King Pasenadi of Kosala, knowing that the Blessed One's silence meant permission, bowed his head to the feet of the Blessed One and departed from before the Blessed One. Then, King Pasenadi of Kosala, from that very night, prepared clean and delicious food and drinks. The next morning, he rose early, spread out seats, placed jeweled water vessels, and invited the Blessed One, from "announcing that the time had come" up to "giving with his own hands and satisfying them," it is the same as before. A certain ascetic mendicant, sitting among the elders, saw the merit of this king directly and, abiding in the fruit of his own merit, thought: "He is not satisfied with merit, he constantly gives alms, he accumulates merit!" And so, great faith arose in his mind. Then, King Pasenadi of Kosala, with his own hands, served clean and delicious food and drinks in various ways to the Sangha of monks, including the Buddha, and satisfied them. When the Blessed One had finished eating and put down his bowl, King Pasenadi, knowing this, took a very low seat and sat before the Blessed One in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Blessed One said: "Great King, in whose name do you dedicate the merit? Is it your own? Or is it for someone who has accumulated more merit than you?" The king thought: "My food has been enjoyed by the Blessed One, who else could have accumulated more merit than me?" And so he said: "Blessed One, it is for the one who has accumulated more merit than me."
