by name, and requested the Blessed One to make dedication. Then the Blessed One, Mu-lto-ba by name, spoke and made dedication. Thus it was done for six days. On the sixth day, the king rested his cheek on his hand, thinking: The Blessed One enjoys my alms, but when making dedication, he speaks by the name of Mu-lto-ba. He sat there displeased, and the ministers saw it and said: Why does Your Majesty rest your face on your hand and sit there displeased? The king said: Wise ministers, now that the Blessed One enjoys my alms, but speaks of dedication by the name of Mu-lto-ba, how can I be happy? Then an old minister said: Your Majesty, please be patient, and tomorrow I will certainly make the Blessed One speak only of Your Majesty's name and make dedication. He instructed those who lived on leftovers: Tomorrow you prepare very exquisite food, and very much of it, and when distributing it, do it like this, make sure that half goes into the monks' bowls, and half is poured on the ground. The next day, they prepared very exquisite food, and very much of it. Then, seeing that the Buddha and the Sangha were seated properly, they began to distribute, pouring half into the monks' bowls and half on the ground. Then Mu-lto-ba ran to collect the food poured on the ground, but those in charge of distributing drove him away again. Then Mu-lto-ba said: If this king has so much wealth, why doesn't he give it to us miserable beggars? What good is it to throw away this food? Mu-lto-ba was upset and could not feel as happy as before. Afterwards, the king thought that the Buddha and the Sangha had finished their meal, and the Blessed One did not mention my name to make dedication, so he went home without hearing the dedication. Then the Blessed One to the King of Kosala

Speaking in the name of King Prasenajit, he made the offering, saying: Elephants, horses, and small chariots, riding to control cities and villages, not seasoned with warm porridge and salt, look like unleavened gruel. Then, the venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One: Venerable, the Blessed One has often enjoyed the umbrella in the palace of King Prasenajit of Kosala, and has made offerings by mentioning his name. I have never heard of such offerings before. The Blessed One said: Ānanda, do you want to hear the cause of the karma that arose because King Prasenajit of Kosala did not season the barley porridge with salt? Blessed One, now is the time. Well-Gone One, now is the time, the Blessed One, because King Prasenajit of Kosala did not give barley porridge seasoned with salt, explained the cause of the karma, and the monks, having heard it from the Blessed One, will uphold it. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, in the past, in a place called Riwo, there lived a householder who took a wife from the same caste, and he played with her, rejoiced, and enjoyed happiness. He played with her, rejoiced, and enjoyed happiness, and begot a son who was handsome, beautiful, and pleasing to look at, and he raised him until he grew up, just as before. After some time, the householder said to his wife: Good woman, I will go to collect debts from the debtors, or be robbed by robbers, and I will take goods to another place. She said: Lord, do so. He took the goods and went to another place, but he did not succeed there and died. Because he died without an heir, the wealth of his house was exhausted, and his son became miserable, and that householder had a reliable friend who said to him: Boy, do my farm work, and I will prepare food for you. He began to do his farm work, and he also prepared food for him. After some time, it was a festival.

Having arrived, that child's mother thought: 'Today, the householder's wife will be busy giving food to friends, relatives, kinsmen, ascetics, and Brahmins. I should go early and deliver that child's food.' So she went early and told the householder's wife about these matters, and she, being angry, said: 'Wait a moment, the ascetics, Brahmins, and relatives have not yet been given to, are you going to give to the child who is being sent? Wait a moment, stay for today. Tomorrow I will give you twice as much.' Then the child's mother thought: 'Will the child not be hungry?' I should send my own warm barley rice without salt. She took it and went to the field, and the child saw her from not far away and said: 'Mother, is there not a little bit of something delicious?' She said: 'Child, today there is not even a little bit of leftover food.' 'Mother, why is that?' She told the child in detail all that the householder's wife had said, and said: 'This warm barley rice without salt was also brought by me, child, eat it.' The child said: 'Leave it and go back.' She left it and went away. When Buddhas do not appear, solitary Buddhas, who have compassion for the lowly and poor, who delight in remote dwellings, and who are the sole objects of offering in the world, will appear. After some time, a solitary Buddha went to that place, and he saw that person's beautiful body, joyful mind, and peaceful conduct, and thought: 'Because I have not previously made offerings to such a true object of offering, I have fallen into this state. If he accepts this warm barley rice without salt from me, I will offer it to him.' Then, that solitary Buddha, knowing the thoughts of that poor man with his mind, held out his begging bowl and said: 'Good man, if you are going to give, put the rice in this bowl.' Then, with strong faith, that person offered the warm barley rice without salt to that solitary Buddha. Monks, what do you think? That poor child at that time was none other than King Pasenadi of Kosala. At that time, at that time.
