They placed nearby vehicles adorned with gold, silver, beryl, and glass, polished like lotuses. Mounting these vehicles, they raised their hands in the middle of the street, exclaiming, "May you be free from illness!" to the Brahmins and householders. They said, "Venerables, are these things permitted by the Blessed One?" They replied, "They are permitted." They said, "Venerables, you ascetics are seduced by the pleasures of desire." At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One considered, "What fault arises from monks traveling by vehicle?" Therefore, monks should not travel by vehicle. This became a fault, and the Blessed One thus instructed: There are two instances in which traveling by vehicle is permissible: when one is old and feeble, and when one is sick and cannot endure. When monks were wandering and carrying their robes and bowls, they went to cross a river, but upon reaching the middle, they could not proceed. At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: Therefore, it is permitted that monks learn to swim. The Blessed One said: One should learn to swim. After saying this, the group of six monks swam back and forth in the Ajiravati River. When the cowherd women came, they saw them and said, "Sisters, come here! We will rescue you!" When they began to rescue those women, they touched their limbs, and after rescuing them, they said, "Sisters, come again! We will rescue you again!" Those women said, "Venerables, even our husbands have not touched our limbs, yet you have touched us. How can we return?" They began to scold, mock, and revile them. At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One considered, "What fault arises from monks touching women?" Therefore, monks should not touch women.

One should not touch. If touched, it becomes a serious offense. The Blessed One said that a monk should not touch a woman, and the people of the city liked the garden, so they all went to the garden. A woman went to the river to fetch water, and because she was afraid, she was swept away by the water. The man who went to look for her saw the monks and asked: "Holy ones, did you see my wife being swept away by the water?" They replied: "Yes, it was she who was swept away by the water." If she is about to die now, how can you just watch her being swept away by the water? The monks reported this matter to the Blessed One, and the Blessed One instructed: "You should rescue her." If others say: "Let go." If you have the ability, then let go. Some people remained motionless, placing them face down on the sand pile, and then abandoning them, letting them be eaten by wolves. One should not abandon them and leave. If they develop attachment, the Blessed One instructed: "You should stay in another place, those who recite should recite, and those who meditate should meditate. If you are worried about it getting dark, you should hand them over to the cattle herders and shepherds who are there, and then leave." The group of six monks grabbed the tail of another family's cow and swam back and forth, depleting the cow's milk. He asked the herdsman: "Why is there no milk today?" The herdsman said: "Because the holy group of six monks..." all the way to them insulting, mocking, and slandering, it was the same as what was said before. The Blessed One instructed: "Therefore, a monk should not grab the tail of a cow and swim." After the Blessed One said that a monk should not grab the tail of a cow and swim, some monks crossing the river wanted to grab the tail of an elephant to cross the river, but they failed. The Blessed One instructed: "You should grab the tails of five kinds of animals with tails to cross the river, namely: a sentient elephant, a sentient horse, the leader of the herd, a buffalo, and a yak. However, you should still swim yourself." After the Blessed One said that you should swim yourself, the group of six monks... the swimming woman...

And they had painted pictures of men and women having intercourse on the water pots, and cleaned them as if they were lotuses. Brahmins and householders saw them and said, 'What are these noble ones doing?' They said, 'The Blessed One has permitted the use of water pots.' 'Noble monks, are you indulging in the qualities of the five desires?' When they were being reproached, the monks reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, 'A monk should not keep water pots painted with pictures of men and women having intercourse, and cleaned as if they were lotuses.' However, two kinds of water pots may be kept: those that have been oiled and old water pots. The householder Anathapindika had a cloister built, and monks wearing wooden sandals came to listen to the Dharma. They scraped the ground with their wooden sandals, causing it to be damaged and broken. The householder Anathapindika arose early the next morning and went to pay homage to the feet of the Blessed One, and he saw this. Having seen it, he said, 'Noble ones, is there an army of four divisions and a gathering of troops here?' They said, 'It is not the king, but some monks wearing wooden sandals came, and they have made this place unseemly.' When he was being reproached, the monks reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One thought, 'These faults have arisen because the monks are wearing wooden sandals.' Therefore, a monk should not wear wooden sandals.' After the Blessed One said that a monk should not wear wooden sandals, the monks made a vow to stay in retreat at home, and when their sandals became wet with mud, the monks reported this to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said, 'A monk may wear wooden sandals inside the house.' Monks, Brahmins and faithful householders offered wooden sandals to the Sangha, but the monks did not accept them. They said, 'Noble ones, when the Blessed One is not in the world,'
