In order to fully enjoy the Dharma, seven days should be allowed. Therefore, having allowed it, in order to act, having blessed it for seven days, one should go. The Blessed One said that having blessed it for seven days in order to act, one should go. When the monks did not know for what purpose, the monks asked the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said, "For the affairs of a layman, for the affairs of a laywoman, for the affairs of a monk, for the affairs of a nun, for the affairs of a novice, and for the affairs of a novice nun." What is the affair of a layman? For example, after a layman brings his own relative, a bride, into his home, he prepares a great deal of clothing and food, and then he sends a messenger to the monks, saying, "Please, venerable ones, come here to offer for enjoyment." If he sends such a message, then having blessed it for seven days, a monk should go for the affair of the layman. This is the affair of the layman. Furthermore, the affair of a layman is like this: a layman wants to build a temple for the Sangha of monks from the four directions. He prepares a great deal of clothing and food, and then he sends a messenger to the monks, saying, "Please, venerable ones, come here to offer for enjoyment." If he sends such a message, then having blessed it for seven days, a monk should go for the affair of the layman. This is the affair of the layman. Furthermore, the affair of a layman is like this: a layman wants to offer a dwelling in that very temple.
