As many dust particles as there are on the earth, that many sentient beings will die from among humans and be born into the animals; as many dust particles as there are on the tip of a fingernail, that many sentient beings will die from among humans and be born into humans. As it is said, like a wheel turning, (this is) what has been poured out (the metaphor). The two (people) said: Holy one, will we also die from among the gods and humans and be born into the hell beings and animals and pretas? He said: O two with good faces, in the cycle of the five realms, as long as the afflictions have not ceased, one must completely revolve like a chain of buckets. The two felt sorrow and spoke verses: Because the impermanent gods are not good, and humans have short lives.

土地不好啊！哪里没有寂静，存在不好啊！涅槃是殊胜的，如来是这样说的。圣者无论如何，我们流转于轮回中，以后不再行持那样的烦恼，为了那样，请为我们开示佛法。具寿大目犍连了知了那两位的想法和习气、界和自性，听闻后，那两位舍弃了一切烦恼，现证了阿罗汉果位。阿罗汉从三界中远离贪欲，粪土和黄金平等，天空和手掌相同的心，具有旃檀和粗布平等，以智慧剖开蛋壳，获得了智慧和神通、各别正知，背离了有和欲的利养、恭敬，被具足权势和近权势的天人们供养、忆念和现前宣说，做了如是的佛法开示。那两位以神变从上方的虚空中降下鲜花，被想要的比丘们看到后，那些比丘们说道：具寿们，这两位是谁啊？是某某和某某啊。他们说道：我们吃了黑色的钵饭，牙齿掉落，头发变白，也没有获得一心。具寿这两位最初仅仅七岁就出家，舍弃了一切烦恼，现证了阿罗汉果位，世尊说阿难陀以精进获得菩提，那是善说啊！比丘们生起疑惑，向断除一切疑惑的世尊请教：尊者，这两位沙弥做了什么业，以那业的异熟，仅仅七岁就出家了。世尊的律藏中，声闻众的学处四根本戒制定后，仅仅依靠这两位而放逸，舍弃了一切烦恼，现证了阿罗汉果位。世尊开示说：比丘们，这两位自己获得了业的集合，缘起。

The land is not good! Where there is no peace, existence is not good! Nirvana is supreme, thus spoke the Tathagata. Noble ones, in any case, we wander in samsara, and in the future, we will not engage in such afflictions. For that, please teach us the Dharma. The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana understood the thoughts, habits, realms, and nature of those two, and after hearing, those two abandoned all afflictions and realized the state of Arhat. The Arhat is free from desire in the three realms, with a mind that equates dirt and gold, the sky and the palm of the hand, equates sandalwood and coarse cloth, breaks the eggshell with wisdom, and has attained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge. Turning their backs on existence, desirable gains, and respect, they are worshipped, remembered, and proclaimed by gods with power and near power. They gave such Dharma teachings. Those two miraculously rained down flowers from the sky above, which were seen by the desiring monks, and those monks said: Venerable ones, who are these two? They are so-and-so and so-and-so. They said: We have eaten black alms bowl rice, our teeth have fallen out, and our hair has turned white, but we have not attained single-mindedness. These two venerable ones were only seven years old when they first renounced, and having abandoned all afflictions, they realized the state of Arhat. The Blessed One said that Ananda attains enlightenment through diligence, which is well said! The monks became doubtful and asked the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: Venerable One, what deeds did these two novices do that, as a result of that karma, they renounced at the age of only seven? In the Blessed One's Vinaya, after the four root vows of the training of the hearers were established, relying only on these two, they became unrestrained, abandoned all afflictions, and realized the state of Arhat. The Blessed One taught: Monks, these two themselves have obtained a collection of karma, dependent origination.
