There, they saw two iron pots boiling and sitting there, and the two of them said: Knowledgeable ones, isn't anyone put in these two pots? They said: No one is put in. Like this, the two nephews of the Venerable Ananda, after being ordained, spend their days lazily. After the two of them die, when the time is ripe, they will be born here, so it is prepared for the two of them. Some are sawn with saws, some are beaten with ropes, and some are poured into large boiling copper pots. There, seeing two iron copper pots boiling, we asked: Sages, is no one put in these two pots? They replied: No one is put in. Like this, the two sons of the courtesan of the venerable Ānanda, having become monks and living lazily, when those two die and the time is ripe, they will be born here, so it is prepared for those two. Two monks, since this is the case, these faults, and others as well, will arise from laziness, so strive diligently. The two began to strive, began to read. If they remembered the hells for sentient beings in the morning, they would not even eat. If they remembered in the afternoon, they would vomit the food, so the two became pale, haggard, thin, weak, with thin necks, dry, and their bodies weakened. Then (Maudgalyāyana) said: Venerable Ānanda, those two have already been persuaded. Venerable one, now praise them. The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to the two: Two monks, go for a walk during the day. The two said: Venerable one, please go, go to another place, we will not go there. Take the cushion. The two were very happy and went to the great son of the venerable Maudgalyāyana. The great son of the venerable Maudgalyāyana said to them: Have you seen? Venerable, we have seen. What is there? The two said: They are making the sounds of the lute, light, Balarī, Mahāti, and Sughoṣaka, and there are two immeasurable palaces there, furnished with bedding and cushions, filled with daughters of gods. Having seen that there were no sons of gods in those two palaces, we two asked the wise ones, why are there no sons of gods in these two palaces? They answered: There are none. Why? They answered: The two sons of the sister of the venerable Ānanda, having gone forth and practiced diligently, will be born here when they die and the time comes, so it is prepared for them.
