You should have the firm conviction that you have entered the sacred refuge of the Three Supremes, and maintain an uncontrived, equanimous state of mind. This is the ultimate refuge. As stated in the *Sutra Requested by Non-Hot*: "A Bodhisattva knows that all dharmas are without self, without sentient beings, without life, without person, not form, not sign, not dharma. Thus, truly seeing the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, is to take refuge in the Buddha with a mind free from defilements. The Dharmata of the Tathagata is the Dharmadhatu. The Dharmadhatu is said to be that which follows all dharmas. Thus, seeing that which follows the realm of all dharmas is to take refuge in the Dharma with a mind free from defilements. What is meditating on the unconditioned nature of the Dharma, teaching the unconditioned nature of the Hearer's Vehicle, and the non-duality of the conditioned and unconditioned? This is to take refuge in the Sangha with a mind free from defilements." Orgyen Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) said: Primordially, emptiness is free from elaboration, The body of non-elaboration, free from elaboration, unconditioned, In a state of non-grasping, beyond mind, I take refuge. Essence, nature, compassion, the treasury of Ka, In the nature of vast, all-encompassing, equal perfection, In the naked, self-luminous, non-conceptual, I take refuge. Therefore, at all times, or in the morning and evening, clearly visualize the refuge field, recite the refuge prayer as much as you know, and finally dissolve the refuge field into yourself, relax your mind and body, and rest in the natural state. This is the first of the four special preliminaries - the guidance on taking refuge, the ninth Dharma session. Then, generate Bodhicitta, as the Vajra verse says: "For the sake of sentient beings, generate the mind of Bodhi." Its commentary, in the self-commentary of the Great Compassionate One (Avalokiteśvara), says: "For the sake of all sentient beings, I shall generate the supreme, great Bodhicitta." To explain its meaning in detail, as stated in the *Avatamsaka Sutra*: "If you wish to see the Buddhas of the ten directions, if you wish to bestow an inexhaustible treasury of merit through generosity, if you wish to understand the inexhaustible suffering of all beings, then you should cultivate limitless qualities."

Generate the mind of bodhi, thus it is said. In the Compendium of Trainings, it says: Those who wish to completely eliminate suffering, and also wish to reach the ultimate of happiness, should stabilize the root of faith, and firmly establish their minds on the path to enlightenment. Thus it is said. In the Sutra Requested by the Dragon King Ocean, it says: For those who have entered into the superior intention of Light Protector, it is not difficult to achieve enlightenment. Why is that? Because the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment depends on generating the mind; as soon as the mind of enlightenment is generated, one will grasp the Buddhas and the Dharmas of the Buddhas. Thus it is said. In the Sutra of Gathering All Merits, it says: Son of No Craving, for example, all rivers, springs, wells, and waterfalls gather and enter into the great ocean. Similarly, whatever object of merit there may be, whether it arises from generosity, or arises from discipline and meditation, whether it is with defilements or without defilements, whether it is worldly or beyond worldly, all those merits gather and enter into the mind of enlightenment. Son of No Craving, therefore, sons or daughters of good family who wish to completely grasp all merits should generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Thus it is said. In the Sutra Entering the Seals of Definite and Indefinite, it says: Manjushri, for whomever generates the mind of enlightenment, therefore, for that mind, there is nothing that is not abandoned among non-virtuous actions, and there is nothing that is not grasped among the Dharmas of the Buddhas. Manjushri, bodhisattvas possess inconceivable qualities. Thus it is said. In the Jewel Heap Sutra, it says: Having faith in the Buddha and the Dharma of the Buddha, having faith in the Dharma of the Buddha's sons, if one believes in the unsurpassed enlightenment, then the mind of noble beings will arise. Having generated faith, reverence, and joy towards all the victorious ones, the Dharma, the Sangha, and likewise all the gurus, the mind of enlightenment, which is the object of offering for the benefit of beings, will also arise. If one believes in the Buddha and the Sugata's Dharma, if one believes in the practices of the Buddha's sons, if one believes in the unsurpassed enlightenment, then the mind of noble beings will arise. Thus it is said.
