Having taken refuge, gods, gandharvas, asuras, nagas, yakshas, and so on, will be liberated from all fears. In the Sutra "Essence of the Sun," it says: Whoever among sentient beings goes for refuge to the Buddha, countless demons cannot harm them. Even if their discipline is broken and their minds are confused, they will surely go to the other shore of liberation. Also, in the "Collection of Mindfulness," it says: Whoever, day and night, constantly remembers the Buddha, and whoever has gone for refuge to the Buddha, is a treasure among humans. The same is said for the Dharma and the Sangha. In the "Collected Perfections" by the Pandit Hero, it says: If the merit of refuge had form, this three-thousandfold world would be too small a container. The great ocean, though a treasure of water, would not suffice to measure it. Also, in the "Story of the Pig Woman," it says: Whoever goes for refuge to the Buddha will not go to the lower realms. Even having abandoned the body of a god, they will be born in the body of a god. The same is said by applying it to the Dharma and the Sangha. Confessing misdeeds is also a profound aspect of refuge. In the "Compendium," it says: If a Bodhisattva enjoys the five desirable qualities, but has gone for refuge to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and thinks of accomplishing Buddhahood, contemplating omniscience, the wise should know that they abide in the perfection of discipline. Thus it is said. Taking refuge purifies sins. The Blessed One said: Just as a pile of dry grass as large as Mount Meru is burned by a small spark, so too, having gone for refuge to the Three Jewels, even sins as large as Mount Meru are purified. Thus it is said. The basis for all vows is also refuge. In the Treasury, it says: Observances of fasting may exist for others, but not for those who have not gone for refuge. Thus it is said. In all the Sutras and Tantras, the benefits of refuge are said to be limitless, but they can be summarized into eight: the benefit of being included as a Buddhist, becoming the basis for all vows, not being harmed by humans or non-humans, all sins and obscurations being purified and lessened, accumulating and increasing a vast collection of merit in one's being, not falling into the lower realms after death, generating a particularly excellent path in one's being, and ultimately, the benefit of attaining unsurpassed enlightenment. These are the eight.

Thus it was said. That was formerly, a son of a god, seeing that he was born as a pig after his life was exhausted, was frightened and terrified. Indra took refuge in him, and he was reborn as a god in the Tushita heaven. Formerly, a yaksha transformed into a tiger and ate people in turn. The old mother and daughter took refuge, and the yaksha saw it as a pile of fire and could not eat it. The female devotee Chandra Good took refuge and spent the night in a terrifying cemetery. Wild animals and non-humans saw it as a pile of fire and did not eat it. The girl Vajra took refuge and purified the karmic obscurations of her ugly form. She was transformed into a body with marks. Formerly, a god was suffering because he had taken birth in hell due to evil deeds. The Bhagavan allowed him to take refuge in the Three Jewels. By taking refuge in the Buddha and the Dharma, he was liberated from the suffering of two countless kalpas. Because of jealousy, he did not want to take refuge in the Sangha, so he said that he would have to suffer for one countless kalpa. Thus, the merit of listening to the Dharma, the merit of hearing the Dharma, and the benefit of taking refuge are inconceivable. If there is no instruction to not destroy that merit, then one anger destroys all merit. In the Bodhisattva Pitaka it is said: That which is called anger destroys the root of virtue accumulated in a thousand kalpas. And in the Bodhicharyavatara it is said: All the good deeds that have been accumulated in a thousand kalpas, such as giving and worshipping the Sugatas, are destroyed by one anger. Therefore, from taking refuge onwards, all virtuous deeds should be sealed by dedicating them immediately, so that the root of virtue does not run out until enlightenment is attained. Even if the virtue is small, if it is sealed with dedication, the interest increases every day and the virtue becomes great. In the Vajra verse, one verse of dedication is said, and its commentary is given by Great Compassion: Thus, I dedicate the virtue of taking refuge to my mother and all sentient beings of the six realms. Explaining its meaning in detail, Intelligence Ocean asked.
