All the sutras and tantras of the three pitakas and the six tantras, especially the 640,000 tantras of the Great Perfection, are brilliantly displayed in the form of golden-lettered scriptures. On the left throne is Guru Padmasambhava, in the attire of a bhikshu, holding a lotus bowl offering refuge. There are also the eight close disciples and sixteen heroes, etc., and all the bodhisattvas abiding on the path, the eight great shravakas, the twelve pratyekabuddhas, the sixteen arhats, the 64,000 arhats, etc., all the sangha of the great and small vehicles. All the bodhisattvas appear as young gods, adorned with silk and jewels. All the shravakas have shaved heads, bare feet, and wear the three dharma robes. On the throne in front is our Tibetan deity, the great compassionate Avalokiteshvara, along with the retinue, the Kagyu's Teachings, Intentional Self-Liberation, Phurba Tantra, etc., all the deities of the six great tantras. In the spaces between these deities are the heroes and dakinis of the twenty-four sacred places, the wisdom protectors, the five classes of eunuchs, etc., the forty-five great protectors, the glorious goddess and her retinue of 1,008 emanations, etc., all appearing as dense as clouds, contemplate that they are truly present. Furthermore, according to the Hinayana view, one takes refuge from now until the end of life, but here, according to the Mahayana view, one takes refuge until one attains Buddhahood. According to the Hinayana view, one takes refuge alone, but here, according to the Mahayana view, I and all sentient beings take refuge. According to the Hinayana view, one takes refuge because one is afraid of the fear of samsara and wants to be liberated from it, but here, one takes refuge in order to be liberated from the fear of samsara, the desire for one's own peace, the Hinayana, and the obstacles and wrong paths of practicing the channels, winds, bindus, and contemplation. Therefore, Ugyen Rinpoche said, "In the manifestation of faith, contemplate that all the objects of refuge in the sky in front are as dense as clouds, and all sentient beings, led by oneself and one's parents, with a strong desire like wanting to be liberated from enemies, bad people, and prisons, not just saying it with the mouth." As it is said, therefore, take refuge in as much detail as you can.

In short, now, due to the great blessing, this refuge verse arising from the Vajra words: The first two lines explain the refuge object, and the last two lines are the actual refuge. Therefore, please recite it three times. In the sky in front, Samantabhadra Buddha is surrounded by countless Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. To Samantabhadra Buddha and all the Buddha's children, I take refuge with single-minded devotion. Three times. Oh, in this way, in your minds, if you have not previously received the refuge vows, they will arise; if you have already received them, they will increase; and if they have been broken, they will be restored. Having thus received the Mahayana refuge vows, you must protect the vows. In the "Seventy Verses on Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels," it says: A layperson who takes refuge in the Three Jewels is the root of the eight vows. And in the "Great Nirvana Sutra," it says: Whoever takes refuge in the Buddha is a true layperson, and at no time does he take refuge in other gods. Having taken refuge in the sacred Dharma, he is free from the mind of harming and killing. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, he does not prostrate to non-Buddhists. And in the "Root Sutra," it says: Do not prostrate to other gods, do not make offerings, do not show respect. If you go to those places, stand openly and recite the verses of the monastery, thereby benefiting them. And in the "Seventy Verses on Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels," it says: Whoever takes refuge in the Three Jewels, having vowed to become a layperson, must protect the three refuges, and not offer or prostrate to all non-Buddhists with respect. And in the "Six Branches of Taking Refuge," it says: To Buddha images and verses, and to clothes with yellow patches sewn on them, show them with faith. To everything spoken from the mouth, do not slander, but place it on the crown of your head. Pure and impure people should be regarded as sacred. And in the "Friendly Letter," it says: How the Tathagata's image, even if made of wood, no matter how it is made, the wise should worship it. And in the "Sutra Requested by Indra," it says: Trading for profit and deceiving for friends, those who perform cutting and purification will fall into the Avici hell and others, like a man shooting an arrow. Therefore, if you destroy or trade Buddha images, scriptures, and stupas, the sin is great, and you will lose your vows. In the "Garland of Birth Stories":
