Therefore, even without the suffering of the lower realms and the desire realm, one may be born as a long-lived deity in the form realm and the formless realm. This has been discussed in the context of removing obstacles, but there is not much benefit in discussing it here, so it is abbreviated. This concludes the sixth teaching session. Now, regarding the faults of samsara, they can be divided into three: the suffering of conditioning, the suffering of suffering, and the suffering of change. The suffering of conditioning is that merely taking this aggregate body is accompanied by suffering, but ordinary beings do not recognize that suffering. Only the noble ones understand it. For example, if there is a single hair on the palm of the hand, it is not seen as rough; but if it enters the eye, it is like seeing something. Except for bodhisattvas who possess great compassion, they do not take rebirth but go to the peaceful realm of reality. The reason they do not remain in the world for long is also because they see that suffering. As it is said in the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge: 'A single hair on the palm of the hand, when it enters the eye, causes discomfort and suffering. Children are like the palm of the hand, not seeing the hair of the suffering of conditioning; the noble ones are like the eye, seeing the suffering in conditioning.' So it is said. Among the three sufferings of suffering, the first is the suffering of the hungry ghosts. As it is said in the Vajra Verses: 'The hungry ghosts are hungry and thirsty.' In its commentary, the Great Compassionate One himself directly stated: 'The hungry ghosts suffer greatly from hunger and thirst.' If we explain the meaning of this in detail, as it is said in the Mindfulness Sutra: 'The hungry ghosts are weakened by hunger and thirst.' And as it is said in the Treatise on the Establishment of the World: 'Even in the realm of Yama, they are tormented by thirst and hunger.' And as it is said in the Letter to a Friend: 'Even the hungry ghosts are afflicted by desire, and the suffering it generates is constant and unbearable. The suffering generated by hunger, thirst, cold, heat, and fear is extremely unbearable, and one should rely on it.' For the hungry ghosts, the summer months are hot, and the winter sun is cold. The trees become fruitless, and merely looking at them causes the rivers to dry up. Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but their stomachs are as large as Mount Meru, and they endure hunger. Even a small amount of discarded filth, they do not have the strength or ability to search for. So it is said. Some hungry ghosts are like that.

Flames blaze from their mouths, they seek to satiate themselves with burning food and gravel; some of the lower classes cannot even find pus and excrement, blood, and other impure things; they block each other's throats with burning logs, the fifth is to seek ripe pus. They are continuously tormented by suffering, due to the karmic rope of misdeeds tightly binding some beings, who will not die for five thousand or even tens of thousands of years. The Sutra says: Great King, if one is born as a hungry ghost, this suffering will last for many hundreds and thousands of years, always tormented by hunger and thirst, not even hearing the sound of food and drink, let alone seeing it, thus suffering. Guru Rinpoche said: If hungry ghosts are categorized, there are two types: hungry ghosts who wander in the world and hungry ghosts who reside in the realm of hungry ghosts. Hungry ghosts who wander in the world are seen by some people at night, they involuntarily harm humans, and suffer the protection and suppression of exorcists. They carry things on their backs, are beaten like demons, beg at places of refuge, seek food and clothing from people, and suffer from vengeful spirits and fierce demons. Hungry ghosts who reside in the realm of hungry ghosts: five hundred yojanas below the earth, there is a place called the "Spacious House of Hungry Ghosts," which is three thousand six hundred yojanas, called the "Outer Obscuration of Hungry Ghosts," where they see food as flames, sparks, and red fire; when thirsty, they see pus, blood, impure things, and boiling sewage; they see those with sticks guarding them; there are no guards in the ocean, but they see men in armor guarding them; the mountains have no movement, but they see them shaking, running, and chasing from behind. Called the "Inner Obscuration of Hungry Ghosts," their heads are the size of large pots, their mouths are the size of needle eyes, their necks are like horsehair, their bellies are the size of a region, and their hands and feet are as thin as large needles, unable to support their bodies. First, they search for food and drink but cannot find it; even if they find it, it cannot enter their mouths; even if it enters their mouths, it cannot pass through their throats; even if it passes through their throats, their bellies, which are the size of a region, cannot be filled. Called the "Intermediate Obscuration of Hungry Ghosts," unable to bear the extreme hunger and thirst, even if they find impure things and nasal mucus, they are robbed by others and cannot enjoy them.
