Furthermore, even the name of water is unheard of, like a mirage. Driven by thirst, they mistakenly think it is water and go to drink. A dry skeleton without flesh or skin, In the sunlight, it appears as a dark shadow, In the evening, it seems to fill the earth. Pretas, especially those with karmic obscurations, Move around seeking food and drink, with flames burning in their mouths. What they eat turns into boiling bile, Burning their bellies, with sparks flying from their bodies. Pretas with common obscurations, Although surrounded by abundant food and drink, They have no right to use it and suffer from hunger and thirst. They are constantly guarding it, fearing that others will take it. Pretas born as sons of gods, In the midst of enjoyment, their waists are submerged, And they see warriors guarding them with weapons. Pretas with revolving flames, Everything they eat and drink turns into flames, Their bones crack and burn into flames. These beings are the suffering of pretas. Thus, Guru Padmasambhava also said: The body of a preta is as large as a big house, The head is like a pottery jar, The throat is like a needle hole, They cannot find food for kalpas and suffer. Driven by hunger and thirst, they run around in all directions. Even if they find it in a hundred paths, they cannot swallow it. Even if a little goes in, it turns into bile in the belly and burns with fire, Which is even more painful. Furthermore, hearing the smell and sound of food and water, Even if they travel day and night for years in many valleys, they cannot find it, Their bodies and minds are exhausted, they wail, And during this time, they cannot die. Furthermore, one type of preta is weakened by hunger and runs in all directions, Seeing food from afar, but exhausted from hunger and thirst, Although there are those guarding it with flames and weapons, they cannot eat it. Their bodies are weak and they faint. Furthermore, seeing water and wanting to drink, but unable to go, When they barely arrive, it turns into pus and blood. Furthermore, hearing the sound of water seeping underground, they dig with their hands, Even if their fingertips touch the bones, it is in vain, and the water is never found. Their bellies are dry, Flames burn from their mouths, they suffer greatly, and cannot die, staying for kalpas. So on and so forth. In accordance with this, King Songtsen Gampo also said that there are four or six types of pretas: Those with external obscurations are afflicted by hunger and thirst, All the food and drink they see is pus and blood, and Vomit.

Furthermore, being guarded by those holding staffs, not having the freedom to eat, is what is seen. That which is called the one with inner obstructions is merely a head; it cannot enter even through a needle's eye, the throat cannot hold even a hair, the stomach as large as a country cannot be filled, and the limbs as thin as grass stems cannot support it. That which is called the obstruction of the obstructed is extremely hungry and thirsty; even unclean food and phlegm that are obtained are snatched away by others. Thirst is such that even the name of water is not heard; even the breath is parched, and there are only fleshless, dry bones. When the shadow of the setting sun arises, at night they come filling the earth. That which is called the obstruction of the doorway is a preta with fire blazing from its mouth, and everything it eats turns into flames; in its belly, it becomes boiling bile that scorches and burns. Furthermore, there is a preta called the one born with a penis, who, even when knee-deep in food, is guarded by a man holding a weapon, and does not have the freedom to eat. That which is called the preta who wanders in the sky does not have freedom over itself; it suffers from longing for food and drink and harms people. The lifespan of a preta is five hundred years, with one day of a preta being counted as one month of a human. Thus it is said. Also, in the Treasury [Abhidharmakosa], it is said: Therefore, the lifespan of pretas is five hundred months of days. Furthermore, when the noble Barley Sprout was going to the shore of the ocean, he saw a black man and asked if there was water there. He replied: I have not heard the sound of water for twelve years, let alone seen it. Although he was born as a preta for only twelve years, it was like three hundred and sixty human years. Furthermore, on a path where the noble Maudgalyayana was going, many preta children were living in great suffering and misery. The noble one said: Our mother has gone to seek food and has not returned; please tell her to come quickly. Then the son of Maudgalyayana went and met that preta mother and told her their words. The preta mother said: Noble one, do not be impatient; for five hundred years I have not found food or drink. If a practitioner were to discard some phlegm, may the pretas obtain it. We many fought over it, and although I obtained it, it was all defiled, so I could not eat it. When a little moisture was squeezed from the residue of beer, it turned blue on the back of the sandalwood hand.
