The merit of accumulating wealth is not as great as meditating on emptiness for a single session. Furthermore, as stated in the Twenty Thousand Verse Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra: "If one were to completely satisfy all sentient beings in a three-thousand great thousand world system with generosity, and establish them in morality, meditative concentration, wisdom, liberation, the wisdom of liberation, as well as the fruits of stream-entry and solitary enlightenment, it would still not be as great as the merit of meditating on the Perfection of Wisdom for even a moment." Also, as stated in the Great Crown Sutra: "The merit of accumulating learning for many eons is not as great as the merit of meditating on the meaning of the nature of reality for one day. Why? Because it distances one from the path of birth and death." Furthermore, as stated in the Earth Store Sutra: "Those who wish to learn yoga should learn to practice the meaning. No matter how many examined words one learns, it is not the same as understanding the meaning of the words." Also, as stated in the Samādhirāja Sūtra, the Blessed One said: "Furthermore, if someone could fill the three-thousand great thousand world system with all the merits mentioned earlier, and obtain the twelve categories of scriptures and fifteen treatises, be able to fluently recite and explain them, and also practice morality, patience, loving-kindness, etc., and also give generously, become the foremost in learning, and also explain the meaning of emptiness and peace, and obtain the five clairvoyances of hearing, even if they did such beneficial and happy things, it would still not be as good as someone who enters into meditative concentration for just one day or one night. Why? Because a person of great learning has a great mind of pride, like a mountain or an ocean. A person with such a great mind of pride will experience suffering in the lower realms for countless eons." Furthermore, as stated in the Samādhirāja Sūtra: "Whoever possesses meditative concentration will be able to eliminate the heavy burden of sins and faults in the cycle of birth and death. Meditative concentration is like the ocean. If I were to speak of the merits and benefits of meditative concentration, there would be no end, and it would not be completed even in an eon." And so on, it is extensively taught.

So, what is the samadhi that has such great benefits? It is entering into myself. Regarding this, the so-called examination meditation of a Pandit is to cut off the added views from the outside; having extensively studied and contemplated the Buddha's teachings of the Sutras and Tantras, and having established the basis of the view through scriptural and logical proofs, one should then practice. Otherwise, if the target is not correct, there is a danger of getting lost, etc., although it is said so; however, the Kusali's settling meditation is to cut off elaboration from within. Even if one studies and contemplates in that way, it is like measuring the sky with an arm-span, and it is impossible to reach the end. Because there is no time, by practicing according to the Guru's instructions, Shamatha, Vipassana, and Yuganaddha will gradually arise, just as when the fire in the stove is extinguished, the smoke from the window naturally disappears. Orgyen Rinpoche said: 'Without realizing this, even a Pandit will be confused; if one realizes this, even a cowherd will be liberated; just as with brown sugar tasted in one's own mouth, there is no need for others to explain the taste; even if one cannot explain it, one can directly ascertain it.' Therefore, what is to be done here is the Kusali's settling meditation. Here, first, by giving the instructions on Shamatha, Vipassana is gradually realized; by seeking the view from meditation, realization is shown. Some, although they have previously received instructions and have some realization of Vipassana, if the experience of Shamatha has not arisen, then the skills and qualities will not be perfected, so here it will also become a boast. In the Great Nirvana Sutra, it is said: 'One who has Shamatha is liberated by Vipassana; one who has Vipassana is liberated by Shamatha.' The cause for the arising of Shamatha is the solitude of body, speech, and mind. In the Bodhicharyavatara, it is said: 'From the solitude of body and mind, conceptual thoughts do not arise.' It is said so. Then, in a solitary place, to sit comfortably, one must adjust the posture. In the Root Tantra, the King of Tantras, the Stainless One, it says: 'Then, having sat in the lotus posture, gazing at the tip of the nose, with the yoga of one's own nature, one should remain seeing that. The essential point of the heart, the two hands, the arms are called "Shasha", having placed them equally with effort, in the nature of non-conceptualization, when the mind is completely flowing, the Lord of the gathering of all Buddhas, at that time, it will arise in that.' And, in the Chatuhpitha Tantra, it says: 'In a pleasant place, having stayed on a solitary cushion.'
