Therefore, one must contemplate deeply on how to extract the essence. For beginners, an order must be arranged. Not arranging an order in the scriptures is to prevent beings in the degenerate age from acting independently and not relying on a teacher. Therefore, here, it is explained in an arranged order. As the scripture says, "Now that we have obtained a human body, we must be diligent in Dharma." Explaining its meaning: First, one must meditate on impermanence of death. As it says in the Extensive Play Sutra: "The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds; the birth and death of beings is like watching a dance; the life of beings is like lightning in the sky; it passes quickly like water flowing down a steep mountain." Also, as it says in the Nirvana Sutra: "If compounded things could be permanent, this would not occur. Therefore, Kundgawo (G具喜), do not grieve for all compounded things are impermanent." Also, as it says in the Vinaya Pitaka: "All that is accumulated will eventually be exhausted, the high will eventually fall, the end of meeting is separation, and the end of living is death." It also says: "Even the long-lived gods who have great power and high status here will diminish from their lifespan, who can escape death?" Also, as it says in the Nirvana Sutra: "If there is birth, there is death; if there is prosperity, there is decline; youth is also impermanent; the prime of beauty is also taken away by disease; the life of living is also taken away by death; nothing is permanent." Also, as it says in the Extensive Play Sutra: "No matter where you live, there is no place that can stop death; it is not in the sky, nor on the sea, nor in the depths of the mountains." Also, as it says in the Impermanence Chapter: "Whether it is a Buddha, a Pratyekabuddha, or the Shravakas of the Buddha, they will abandon this body, let alone ordinary people?" It also says: "Many men and women, even those who are in their prime, will die. Do not say that this person is still young, what assurance is there in living? Some die in the womb, some die at birth, some toddle, some are old, some are young, some are in their prime, they will gradually decline, just like ripe fruits fall." It also says: "In the morning, many people are seen, in the afternoon some are not seen; in the afternoon, many people are seen, in the morning some are not seen."

Guru Rinpoche said: After being born, death is certain. This is the nature of impermanence, like a person whose heart is struck by an arrow. Moreover, when death will occur is uncertain. This is the characteristic of impermanence, like dew on the tip of grass. Nothing can help with death. This is the function of impermanence, like the lengthening shadow as the sun sets. First, there are three reasons why death is certain: those born before have not remained; lifespan does not increase but only decreases; body and mind are compounded, so death is certain. Second, there are three reasons why when death will occur is uncertain: lifespan has no fixed time; there are many causes of death; compounded things have the nature of disintegration, so when death will occur is uncertain. Third, there are three reasons why nothing can help with death: accumulated wealth, related relatives and friends, and built castles, none of these can help. Thus it is said. In the testament of Guru Rinpoche it says: The diligence of Tibetans is only for this life, doing it tomorrow, doing it the day after tomorrow, a lifetime is exhausted. Even now when dying, they cannot remember the Dharma, recognize this necessity! If one leaves absent-mindedly and forgetfully, then I (Padmasambhava) will return! There is no better way to liberate from miserliness than this! Thus it is said. Previously, there was not one who could escape death. What certainty do you have of not dying? Count in your mind how many of your peers or those younger than you have died! Dying is not enough, after death one must experience the fear of the bardo. The four terrifying sounds of the bardo, the eight terrible dangerous paths must be traversed. This is not enough, one must take rebirth due to the power of karma. In the Sutra of the Three Vows it says: Whatever kind of karma is done, that kind of result will ripen. Even after hundreds of millions of kalpas, it will not be wasted. Thus it is said. In the Sutra Requested by Despa it says: For hot seeds, hot fruits will ripen; for sweet seeds, sweet fruits will grow. Using this as an analogy, evil deeds bring suffering, and virtuous deeds bring happiness, you should understand it that way. Thus it is said. In the Hundred Karmas Sutra it says: There are many kinds of karmas, therefore they create the diversity of the world of beings. Thus it is said. In the White Lotus of Compassion it says: The world is made by karma, it is a manifestation of karma. Sentient beings are made by karma, they are
