The first stage is said to be like water flowing from a steep cliff. That is, the water from a steep cliff flows down with waves. If you are caught in it, it is as if you are being carried away. If you are indifferent to it, that is not right. Tilopa said, "The middle stage is like the Ganges River flowing slowly." Zhang Rinpoche said, "Then, like a slowly flowing river, awareness is slow and thoughts are few." Their meaning is that, from both the definitive meaning of Gyatso (a person's name) and the oral instructions of the lineage of accomplished ones, if you observe and practice as above, thoughts will gradually decrease and you will enter a state of non-thought. Sometimes thoughts arise suddenly, but they do not continue, and they disappear like snow falling on a stone. If thoughts are as numerous as hairs and cannot be counted, and your practice is like getting lost, that is what is called "being in the middle stage, with the water flowing slowly." If you are far away and cannot see the flow of water clearly, that is not right; you should look at it as if you are close. So it is said. At this time, the second experience is like the flow of fine rain, which comes from the oral tradition of the lamas. Sometimes there is a little pause, sometimes it drizzles. When it is drizzling, observe relaxedly; when it pauses, tighten up a little and stay in that state. There seem to be many people who experience this. Pal Tsuklak Trengwa said, "Again, focus your mind on it, mainly relaxing inward as if resting from exhaustion. Without expecting meditation to come, and without fearing that it will not come, keep the posture and gaze still with a light heart. In this way, thoughts will gradually subside. Body and mind are comfortable, slow and relaxed, the posture is without pain, and even when resting from meditation, do not let the mind focus on external things, but keep the mind in a state of ease and clarity. The actions of body, speech, and mind naturally become slow and relaxed. At this time, subtle afflictions do not harm. Many unprecedented scenes appear in the objects of the five senses. The so-called 'being in the middle stage, with the water flowing slowly' refers to the intermediate stage of calm abiding. So it is said. Tilopa said, "The final stage is like water meeting mother and child."
