Even without leaving, there is no thought in the mind. The body does not know how to move, The body is in a state of stillness. Do not pull him up by his hands. If you do that, he may be reborn as an animal, or go mad from loss of memory, so strike his ears. Burn incense on his nose. Splash water on his face, as if waking up. Generally, by stopping thoughts, through the power of habit, no thoughts arise in the mind, and one is in a state of unconsciousness. To consider this Mahamudra is the view of the Chinese Hwa Shang and the way of the heretics. Sakya Pandita said: The stillness in which the eight consciousnesses cease is similar to the cessation of the Shravakas, and is the cause of rebirth as an animal. Götsangpa said: I think that meditating by stopping thoughts is itself heretical. Je Dus Khyen said: When that happened for the first time, I asked Dakpo, and he said: Oh, that's the worst. Be careful not to fall into it. When Raga Asya was about five years old, he recited a verse from the Gur Bum, and seemed to fall into a state of unconscious stillness for a moment. If that is considered meditation, it is the wrong path. It is only a sign of the arising of meditation. In the past, a guest's son rested in the Shintu Do cave, keeping his body in position, and fell into a state of unconscious stillness, and his companions searched for him but could not find him, and lost him. The following year, the guest camped there, saying: This is where my son was lost, and went down to Shintu. In a cave, he was sitting upright. His companions called him and gathered in front of him. He woke up and said: Hey guys, are we going now? Then he stood up. There was nothing wrong with his body. Later he entered the Dharma and is said to have become an accomplished one named Menyak Gomchen. Furthermore, in this stage of stillness, for the experience of clarity, if the root nature is good, the ten signs are consistent. In the place where the eyes see, there is smoke, fireflies, mirages, candles, the moon, the sun, flames, etc., as well as bindus, balls of light, rainbows, etc. Furthermore, even when the eyes are closed, one can see clearly. One sees and experiences various beings, shapes, sounds, smells, tastes, tactile sensations, etc. The Lankavatara Sutra says: Child's play samadhi, and the samadhi of distinguishing meanings, likewise

Merely the samadhi of focus, and likewise the samadhis of virtue, etc., after the yogi has strived, he sees shapes like the sun and moon, light and lotuses, etc., lines like the sky and fire, with various signs, which the Tirthikas use to guide the path, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, will also fall into their realm of practice. Completely abandon those, when they become without appearance, then the hands of all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, will all arise from the pure lands, they will use it to anoint your head, this is the sign of truly following. Thus it is said, whatever wondrous visions arise, they are only small signs of Shamatha, not the actual meditation. Then, the first abiding arises, in the Sutra Requested by Ratnachuda it says: Son of good family, also extremely fast, not abiding, moving like a monkey and the wind, like a flowing river, like a butter lamp, going to a distant place, without a body, dried up in the object, practicing in the six sense fields, the mind with other-knowing, the mind abiding, one-pointed, not scattered, one-pointed in Shamatha, without distraction, this is the mind abiding. Also, Tilopa said: Karma is initially like water in a ravine. Zhang Rinpoche said: When the first abiding arises, like a cliff collapsing and water gathering, thoughts arise without ceasing, one might think there is no experience of meditation, however much thought arises, that much is known, this is slightly abiding. Before there is abiding, thoughts will wander freely, even though they constantly move, one does not realize it. Also, from both the Definitive Meaning Ocean and the Instructions of the Accomplished Lineage: Initially, it seems that the mind is tightly abiding on the object, just grasping a little bit. Then gradually, slightly and momentarily, it seems that more conceptual thoughts have arisen than before, but it is not that more have arisen. Before, because you had not meditated, even though conceptual thoughts arose, you did not notice them, now the mind is equally placed, because the awareness is clear, you notice them. Regarding this, do not chase after the beginning of conceptual thoughts, abide in this, conceptual thoughts will not flow downwards, however much arises, that much is recognized. Even though there is no need to shorten the session, and the awareness is like the eyes moving around, but if the continuum of meditation arises without ceasing, it is abiding.
