Whatever arises in the mind, recognize that as Mahamudra. Similarly, Songtsen Gampo (c. 605-650) taught this Dharma of Great Compassion in conjunction with Dzogchen. The view of encountering Dharmata is like meeting someone you knew before: What is called Dharmata is not elsewhere. One's own mind-essence, abiding without any fixation. For example, just as when people who knew each other before meet later, they immediately recognize each other and think, "He is here." Just by the lama's pointing out, one recognizes one's own mind-essence as Dharmata. The view of thoughts arising as wisdom is like a fire spreading in a forest: These present thoughts, without interruption, are without any fixation. For example, just as when a fire blazes in a dense forest, all the plants become helpers of the fire. All subtle and gross thoughts of the three times, initially have no place of arising, therefore are empty; in the middle, have no place of abiding, therefore are empty; finally, have no place to go, therefore are empty. Therefore, only the wisdom of emptiness arises. The view of self-liberation of characteristics is like a drop of water dissolving into water: All phenomena that appear as objects are not beyond Dharmata. For example, just as a bubble arises from water and then dissolves into the water itself. All dharmas arise from Dharmata, and all dharmas are liberated in their own place. Thus it is said. Dombi Heruka's view, Dagpo Rinpoche said: If the water is not turbid, it will be clear, similarly, leave it uncorrected, remain natural. Just as the sun is not obscured by clouds. The six consciousnesses do not cease, remain in their natural state. In all times and activities, remain without distraction. Thus it is said. Jetsun Drakpa Gyaltsen said: Look at the mind of no-mind. If there is something to be seen, it is not mind-essence. Seeing without seeing is seeing mind-essence. Do not let the mind of no-seeing be distracted. Thus it is said. Jetsun Sakya Pandita said: When self-arisen wisdom arises, all thoughts become the essence of wisdom. There is no difference between meditating and not meditating. Thoughts dissolve into the Dharmadhatu. Thus it is said. Kyeme Zhang said: In meditating on Mahamudra, there is nothing that must be done. The three, preliminary, main practice, and subsequent, have no order, and there is no fixed number. There is no need to calculate time and date. Whenever you remember, be close to and read.

Just let go! There is no beginning, middle, or end. One's own mind is unborn, a continuous stream. These turbulent, swirling waves, When left unthought, they naturally become clear. This obscuration of one's own mind's thoughts, When left uncorrected, it naturally becomes clear. Do not fabricate or manipulate, relax and abide! Do not retract awareness, release it openly! Do not crave or desire, let it be natural! Do not fixate on a target, let it be natural! Do not be overly active, abide quietly! Without seeking the mind's abode, abide like the ungrounded sky! To the past, future, and present, Without thinking, keep awareness fresh! Whether thoughts arise or do not, Do not deliberately meditate, abide loosely! In short, without meditating on anything, Release awareness as it pleases and abide! There is no need for experience or action in anything, Shake from the nature of the Dharmakaya! So it is said. From the mouth of glorious Götsangpa: In the original state beyond thought and expression, let awareness abide loosely and gently! Abiding, this word itself is also a word. It is not grasping and abiding, nor lifting up and abiding, nor fabricating and abiding. But in the natural state of things, abiding as it is, there is no need to meditate with conceptual fabrication. There is no meditation to visualize the deity clearly, no meditation to extract the essence, no meditation to forcibly control the means. Let the mind itself abide naturally, Without fabrication, without tension, that is how to abide. Even if you say to abide without fabrication, you still fabricate, wanting a comfortable, stable, clear, bright, empty state. Do not do that, that way of abiding is to abide in the unity of freshness, looseness, and natural clarity. That is because freshness is lost, so it is fresh; because there is no effort, so it is loose; because there is no antidote, so it is naturally clear. So it is said. Also, the abbot of the monastery said: When a thought suddenly arises, its essence and nature are nothing at all, and nothing is obstructed. The essence does not discriminate in any way, but appears with clear emptiness and nakedness. Likewise, when one thought arises, look at its essence; when two thoughts arise, look at their essence. In this way, whatever thoughts arise, they all dissolve without duality, break into pieces, become completely transparent, run freely without clinging. For becoming a Buddha, this is the closest. Samsara itself is food, samsara is suppressed, samsara becomes dull, samsara becomes dilapidated. This is the path, method, and wisdom. Appearance and emptiness arise in succession.
