are caused by sinful actions. Thus it is said. Virtuous actions are, as stated in the Precious Garland: Without attachment, hatred, and ignorance, the actions arising from that are virtuous. Virtuous actions lead to all happy realms, and happiness in all lifetimes. Thus it is said. In the Sutra Requested by Arya Gyalwai Lodrö, it is said: Sons of noble family, those who desire merit should make offerings to the Tathagata. Those who desire wisdom should diligently listen to the Dharma. Those who desire wealth should increase generosity. Those who desire beautiful form should cultivate patience. Those who desire eloquence should respect the lama. Those who desire retention should be without pride. Those who desire happiness should completely abandon all sins. Those who desire to bring happiness to sentient beings should generate the mind of enlightenment. Those who desire a melodious voice should speak truthfully. Those who desire qualities should rely on virtuous spiritual friends. Those who desire tranquility should meditate extensively in solitude. Those who desire insight should extensively analyze the Dharma. Those who desire the Brahma realm should cultivate loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Those who desire the perfections of gods and humans should properly adopt and abide in the ten virtuous paths. Those who desire to attain complete nirvana should diligently engage in listening and contemplation. Those who desire all qualities should make offerings to the Three Jewels. Thus it is said. In the Madhyantavibhāga, it is said: Writing letters, making offerings, giving charity, listening, reading, and holding, explaining, reciting, thinking about it, and meditating, the nature of these ten practices obtains immeasurable and perfect merit. Thus it is said. In the Gongpa Düpa, it is said: Because of not knowing and not understanding the dharmas, if one greatly respects and serves the supreme lama, one will be liberated from the ocean of samsara. Thus it is said. In the Jataka, it is said: Always give to those who possess morality, adorned with generosity and respect. By allowing wealth to be given in this way, it will follow and not be taken away. Thus it is said. Thus it is said. In the Letter to a Friend, it is said: L

Knowing that the enjoyment is fleeting and without essence, To monks, Brahmins, the poor, and friends, Offerings should be given properly in the next life, There is no better relative than giving. Thus it was said. Again, to explain it in an easy-to-understand way: The result of fully ripening from taking life is to be born in hell. The result of the corresponding cause, even if born as a human, is to have a short life and many illnesses. The result of dominance is to be born in an inauspicious place. The result of fully ripening from taking what is not given is to be born as a hungry ghost. The result of the corresponding cause, even if born as a human, becomes poor. The result of dominance is to be born in a place with many hailstorms. The result of fully ripening from engaging in sexual misconduct is to be born as a hungry ghost. The result of the corresponding cause is to be born as a wife hated by enemies. The result of dominance is to be born in a hot valley, as a hairless animal. The result of fully ripening from lying is to be born as an animal. The result of the corresponding cause, even if born as a human, is hated by others. The result of dominance is to be born in a place with a bad smell. The result of fully ripening from divisive speech is to be born in hell. The result of the corresponding cause is to be separated from friends. The result of dominance is to be born in a place with great differences in elevation. The result of fully ripening from harsh speech is to be born in hell. The result of the corresponding cause is to be hated by others. The result of dominance is to be born in a place with coarse food. The result of fully ripening from wrong views is to be born as an animal. The result of the corresponding cause, even if born as a human, is very ignorant. The result of dominance is to be born in a place with no possessions. If these non-virtuous deeds are done with hatred, one falls into hell; if done with desire, one falls into the realm of hungry ghosts; if done with ignorance, one falls into the animal realm. If done with great (afflictions), one falls into hell; if done with medium (afflictions), one falls into the realm of hungry ghosts; if done with small (afflictions), one falls into the animal realm. If done in a high place, one falls into hell; in a medium place, one falls into the realm of hungry ghosts; in a low place, then...
