and then taught the Dharma after examining him. Also, from the Five Stages: "Whoever has a deceitful mind and is lazy, and sees the faults of the Guru as virtues, reviles the Guru, even if he receives empowerment, he will become arrogant. A person with a low mind and compassion will never attain perfect omniscience." Also, from the Five Stages: "If you see the Guru in the assembly, turn your back on him. Then, he goes to a secluded place and prostrates. Such a student with a bad nature and degraded, even if he is your own son, should be completely abandoned like a stranger. Even if he is born into a royal family, a merchant family, or a high Brahmin family, he should never be kept near him because of reliance." It is also said: "He despises the Guru, is greedy, has no faith, is arrogant about mantras, and is filled with pride when he sees scriptures. To those who have no faith and have not received empowerment, do not waste your life talking about the stages of the path." It is said. What is a suitable student like? From the Tantra of the Ornament of the Cemetery: "He is brave, disciplined, intelligent, patient, honest, without deceit, faithful, intelligent, generous, learned, and keeps his vows." Also, from the first chapter of the Arrangement of the Net of Illusion: "He who delights in virtue and meditation, always respects the Guru, and constantly makes offerings to the deities, if he possesses these qualities, he is a student." It is said. Such a student should not be taught as soon as he says, "Please teach the Dharma." As it says in the Sutra of the Moon Lamp: "To avoid the fault of giving Dharma, if someone asks you, first say, 'I will not teach immediately.'" Also, this is not a business transaction, but an examination of the student's lineage. If the Dharma is beneficial to him, it is permissible to teach even if he does not ask. As it says in the Sutra itself: "Examine the vessel and then act. If the vessel is known, it is permissible to teach even if he does not ask." It is said. Then, when teaching the Dharma, sitting on the Dharma throne and wearing elaborate hats and robes are not for pretense or vanity, but for the greatness of the Dharma. As it says in the Holy Dharma White Lotus Sutra: "In a clean and pleasing place, spread out a soft cushion, and then spread out various kinds of fine silks, sit on a throne with a footstool." Also, as it says in the Sutra Requested by Ocean of Intelligence: "The Dharma speaker should be clean and pure, and universally dis-

One should be careful in conduct, wash well, and dress well. So it is said. The benefit of teaching the Dharma in this way is that filling immeasurable realms of the world with the seven royal emblems, various jewels, lamps, and incense is superior to making offerings to all the Buddhas. From the Heap of Jewels Sutra: If someone fills excellent realms of the world with as many grains of sand as are in the Ganges River with precious jewels, and offers them to the Victorious One with a supreme virtuous mind, it is superior to someone giving one verse to one sentient being. Giving a vast gift of jewels, giving a verse accomplished with compassion is so great that it cannot be counted. So it is said. The Sutra says: For the sake of benefiting whom, teaching my Dharma properly becomes an offering. It is not truly offering to the Victorious One with flowers, incense, and lamps. So it is said. Teaching the Dharma is superior to giving charity by filling all the worlds with gold, silver, and various jewels. From the Maitreya Lion Sutra: If one fills Buddhafields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges with the seven precious jewels, and offers them to the Victorious One with a mind of great joy, it is superior to someone giving one verse to one sentient being. Giving a vast gift of jewels, giving a verse accomplished with compassion is so great that it cannot be counted, let alone two or three. So it is said. In the Golden Light Sutra it is said: Shariputra, among all the gifts, I have said that the gift of Dharma is supreme. So it is said. From the Naga King Ocean's Questions: The gift of Dharma purifies the manifest knowledge of those who have exhausted defilements. So it is said. In the Lion's Questions: By the gift of Dharma, one remembers births. So it is said. It is more beneficial to speak a single verse of Dharma in the degenerate age than to give away all the worlds filled with gold. From the Maitreya Lion Sutra: If one fills realms as numerous as the sands of the Ganges with pure gold and gives them away, the benefit of speaking a single verse in an evil age is immeasurable. So it is said. No matter how good worldly connections and conformity are, they are not as profound as the connections of the Dharma. In the Samadhiraja Sutra it says: Giving is supreme, one giving is superior to one.
