etc. The karmic agents, billions of Yamas, are seen as gods and goddesses by the pure, and as terrifying Yamas by the impure. In the outer sixteen iron cities, Yama's eight males and eight females dwell in illusion. At the juncture of birth, old age, sickness, death, and the boundary between life and death, there are fierce karmic agents with great renown. In three hundred and sixty days and nights, there are two Yamas, male and female, who take life. Therefore, from seven hundred and twenty onwards, there are karmic agents who cut off life. At the time of taking rebirth in a previous life, the amount of time one is allowed to stay in this world is written on Yama's ledger. When that time arrives, messengers are sent, and there is no way to extend it. After death, if one realizes the clear light, and if transference of consciousness is definitely accomplished, and if one is born in the formless realm, and if the bardo is definitely severed, then there is no need to go to Yama's court. Otherwise, if it is easy to distinguish between virtue and non-virtue, the fierce and renowned one will dissect. If it is difficult to distinguish between the many kinds of virtue and non-virtue, then one is sent to the presence of the King of Dharma. Even then, if it is difficult to distinguish, then one looks at the small-letter weighing mirror. From looking at which is more, virtue or non-virtue, anger will not arise in the mind. These kings and ministers of Yama, in reality, are emanations of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, who show virtue and non-virtue. Even though they have great compassion, it is because of the obscurations of our own bad karma that they appear as wrathful and fierce ones who snatch away life, and are seen as cruel and malevolent rakshas. These places and palaces are not like dreams, but actually exist in this lower direction. To the north of the eight hot hells, below what is called the Snow Mountain, at twenty-one thousand leagues, there is the Blister Hell. From there, gradually downwards, every two thousand leagues, the seven cold hells are established in order. Thus, in the lower northeast direction of the sixteen hell realms, there is a hell called Shambhala, whose name, shape, and suffering are the same as the eight hot hells, but the suffering there is seven times greater. This is also stated in the "Path of Liberation" and other texts. Below all of these, on top of the great wind mandala, there is a place called the Vajra Hell, where one must experience all the sufferings mentioned above at the same time, and the length of life is as long as space. It is the place where those who have broken their vows are born. That is called the Vajra Hell, the tantra.

These are extensively spoken of in the scriptures. The two, Torment Without Interruption and Vajra Hell, although the Victorious Drigungpa considers them to be the same in meaning, they are explained in the tantras as existing separately because their lifespans and sufferings are not the same. Now, having obtained a human body, as well as temporary happiness and enjoyment, and also the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death, are not actually established as true; it is said in the scriptures that these are merely one's own deluded appearances. Even if one only understands this meaning, things like birth, aging, sickness, and death, as well as harm caused by ghosts, demons, and enemies, seem to be experienced directly. Even if hell is a deluded appearance, the sentient beings born there actually experience suffering, and their bodies are also substantial, not like a dream. A dream is just a brief moment of one night, and there is no mention of lifespan in it, but the lifespan of hell is explained in detail. Therefore, regarding the world of hell, one should generate fear in oneself, and for those born there, generate a mind of compassion, and try to make them shed tears. All the beings currently born there have been one's parents many times in one's many lifetimes. Alas, how pitiful! Therefore, for the benefit of all those beings, one should practice giving and taking, and radiate the light of the yidam devas. From the abyss of hell, rescue all beings, and in order for them to attain liberation, seal it with vast dedication and prayers. Thus spoke Raga Asya. Mangalam! Alas, alas, how sad! Even though not seen with the physical eye, by understanding the meaning of the Victorious One's scriptures, the suffering of hell is remembered in the mind. Fighting, cursing, mutual slaughter, and acts of quarreling and battling, on the iron ground burning with flames, all beings gather together and fight each other. Sharp weapons cut and kill each other, all beings fall and faint, and the sound of "May they revive!" is heard. Having revived upon hearing the sound, they cut each other as before. Furthermore, there is beating and destroying until death, and after reviving again, they are beaten. Inside the iron fence, weapons burning with fire fall like rain. They are boiled in iron and copper pots burning with fire, and squeezed in the middle of burning trees. In the dark room, one's own hair burns, one's own body is burned, and one is devoured by many birds and insects. Clothes burn, and the body is burned. The sentient beings born there hold water knives, spears, swords, as well as hammers, short spears, sharp nails, and bows and arrows.
