Practice pure perception without bias towards Na (Naropa), The difference between having practice and not having practice lies in distraction and non-distraction. When not distracted, look at the essence of your own mind, Keep these in the heart of Ser Lingpa. Thus he spoke. This is the preliminary song of instruction, called "The Iron Hook of the Mind." ༈ །།Namo Mahamudra Ye (藏文, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning)! Great Brahmin Saraha, Though transcended humanity, yet with human form, Leads beings, possessing great compassion. I prostrate to the kind root guru! Ah, old patron Ser Lingpa, if you wish to cultivate Mahamudra, Then abandon the thought of "I will meditate on this," Discard the narrow-minded thought of not listening to advice, Cut off the hope of wanting to generate excellent meditation, Do not follow the footsteps of what was done in the past, Stop repeatedly thinking about what to do in the future. Look at the present mind, nakedly, Without any adornment or alteration. Though there is nothing to see, it is clear and distinct, Not existent, nor a non-real thing, Not non-existent, the mind is clear and luminous. Bright, open, and naked. This is the Great Seal, Mahamudra. Ser Lingpa, do not seek it externally. Even if it does not stay and flows in the ten directions, The wave is water, the essence is one. Ser Lingpa, distraction is not a fault. Even if sometimes it is unclear and turbid, Like the clarity and dimness of the sky, There is no difference between clear and unclear. Seeing one's own face is enough. Ser Lingpa, do not desire clear, clear, good, good, Abide in whatever arises. Sometimes blissful and good, Sometimes clear and empty, naked, Sometimes empty experience like the sky. Even if realization seems high, Ser Lingpa, do not generate pride. Sometimes doubt and hesitation arise, Fear of falling into obstacles and wrong paths. At that time, visualize the guru on the crown of your head, Pray in the manner of calling out from afar, Removing obstacles and increasing merit is enough. Ser Lingpa, there is no need to seek other methods. Even if one is diligent for a while, If one does not cultivate it continuously, Meditation may have the danger of deviating from the path. The duration of meditation should be as long as death. Ser Lingpa, do not be impatient. Even if one cultivates it continuously, Even if it seems that there is no progress or increase, Like a child hiding something, Without arrogance, the increase of merit will naturally occur. Ser Lingpa, do not be impatient for results. Most of the great accomplished ones of the past, Were liberated by meditating for twelve years. Ser Lingpa, contemplate on this. This short song, whatever comes to mind immediately, Arose in today's experience.
