The ten great directional protectors with great power in the pure realms, along with their retinues, constantly provide protection and assistance, remove obstacles, and bestow accomplishments. This seems to be their vow. Therefore, in order to receive such empowerment and maintain unwavering faith, please repeat (this mantra). This was said by the monk Rahula Asya. The story of Vajrapani surrounded by the Eight Planets: It comes from the Great Tantra of Purifying the Lower Realms, the Later Treatise. The eight great planets, along with their constellations, relying on offering their respective essences, the Blessed One Vajrapani praised, saying "Excellent!", and blessed them. Thus, he spoke of the mandala of Vajrapani surrounded by the planets and constellations. Thereafter, those great planets promised, "We will always act in this way." Therefore, the constellations, moments, instants, short periods, times, months, dates, conjunctions, houses, seasons, combinations, and entrances, as well as all the deities of the mandala, also promised, "We will never disobey the commands of those great beings, but will protect them like a sovereign. We will separately cause villages, cities, towns, regions, royal palaces and their retinues, and all places of the royal palace to flourish. Even when great fears arise, if we are offered to, no harm will come from evil spirits, and no fear will occur." They made such promises and vows. Therefore, the benefits of receiving this empowerment or offering to this mandala will accomplish everything in the same way. This is its meaning. All the promises made by the ten directional guardians in the past are to avert all untimely deaths, thereby prolonging life; to protect and rescue from all harm from pretas, spirits, and rakshasas; to pacify harm from nagas, and to make grains and crops flourish; to pacify harm from wind, and to produce six kinds of fruits; to ward off harm from the sixteen fears; to protect and increase livestock, horses, and other domestic animals; to protect and manage land, dwellings, relatives, and servants; to eliminate harm from weapons; to pacify harm from poison; to erect a vajra tent for protection, thereby bringing auspiciousness, and to accomplish all desired purposes; to be without obstacles, and to attain accomplishments.
