Why does it arise? It is said that it is for the sake of making those who are disheartened by the unpleasant rejoice and observe. The first three formless realms are both with outflows and without outflows, because these are meditative virtues, therefore both exist in them, and because it is said to focus on the truth. Then, why is it necessary to enter into samadhi for liberation and subjugation, etc.? Because it is the antidote to attachment, to sever the attachment of afflictions, and to gain mastery over samadhi, for these two reasons. If the attachment of afflictions is not severed and mastery over samadhi is not gained, then virtues such as freedom from afflictions, and transforming things that exist in any land, etc., into gold, etc., and blessing them to exist for a long time, and relinquishing or holding life, and turning Mount Sumeru into dust, etc., the miraculous powers of the noble ones will not be accomplished, therefore it is for the sake of accomplishing these. Furthermore, why is it said that only the third and eighth liberations are realized with the body and dwelt in after being perfected, while others are not? Answer: In order, the first two liberations and the first three formless realms, because they have abandoned all the obscurations of the liberation of form and formlessness, therefore they are the main ones, and because they dwell at the edge of the realms and lands of form and formlessness, as it appears in the commentary. However, it should be understood that those two, in order, manifested the complete liberation of the lands of form and formlessness, therefore it is so stated. Or, the noble ones dwell in those two many times, therefore it is so stated, as it is stated in the commentary of the Compendium. Also, from the Sutra Arising from the Eight: Perceiving internally as form, looking at the small external forms, colors good and colors bad, subduing those forms, seeing with subdued wisdom, perceiving in this way, this is the first place of subjugation. Similarly, perceiving internally as form, looking at the large external forms, colors good and colors bad, from "looking" onwards, extensively, until "this is the second place of subjugation." Similarly, internally

Because of perceiving without form, there are two ways of looking at the small and large forms outside, making a total of four. Internally perceiving without form, the external form is blue, showing it as blue in color, a blue light appearing, for example, a flax flower, or a perfect blue silk from Varanasi, blue in color, showing it as blue, etc. Then, observing all the blue things that appear, and knowing them with mastery, seeing these forms with mastery. Becoming aware in this way, this is the fifth transcendence-base of mastery. Similarly, for yellow, red, and white, observing them in this way, four times, thus the eight transcendence-bases of mastery are taught. Among them, perceiving as form and perceiving as without form are the same as liberation. Small and large are the forms of beings and objects, or subtle and coarse. Good and bad colors are pleasing and displeasing, or the forms of gods and humans. 'Mastery' means controlling. Knowing is shamatha (calm abiding), and seeing is vipassanā (insight), as the noble Asanga said. In the examples of the four colors, in both cases of meaning, each one mentions four words such as blue, etc., which are briefly indicated in order, and the co-emergent, artificial, and the common color of both co-emergent and artificial. Flax, Dongga, Bandhujivaka flowers, and starlight Babasang and silk are examples of co-emergent and artificial in order. Becoming aware in this way, whether mastering or not mastering, there is no manifest pride. Master Gampopa explains that knowing is just the initial knowing, the path of no interruption. Seeing is the completion of yoga with its cause, the path of liberation. These first four are the antidote to the arising of attachment and aversion to both color and shape, and the remaining four are the antidote to attachment to other colors and mental depression. Thus, from these eight, the nature, ground, what is the antidote, and the object of the first two masteries should be understood as in the first liberation, the one with form looking at form. Similarly, mastery.
