Explanation of the merits of relying on this. Explanation of the merits of relying on this. Secondly, explaining the merits of relying on this is divided into two parts: the main text and the explanation of special dharmas. The first part has four immeasurables, which are the immeasurables that arise from focusing on limitless sentient beings and producing limitless merit as a result, namely, loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, which are the four aspects. The reason for determining these four is that they are, in order, the antidotes to hatred, and various harms included by hatred, etc., the antidote to rejoicing in the perfections of others, and the antidote to desire and much hatred. If equanimity can also act as an antidote to desire like the contemplation of unattractiveness, what is the difference between the two? The Vaibhashikas say that the contemplation of unattractiveness and equanimity are, in order, the antidotes to desire for color and desire for sexual intercourse. The teacher, however, considers the contemplation of unattractiveness as the antidote to desire for sexual intercourse, and cultivating the antidote to desire for relatives such as parents by contemplating them as unrelated is equanimity. The nature of the immeasurables is that the root of virtue without hatred towards sentient beings is loving-kindness. Compassion is also the same as that, being a root of virtue without hatred. If one knows that others have happiness, mental happiness is immeasurable joy. Equanimity is the virtue of non-attachment. Then, how does it become the antidote to hatred? It becomes so because the hatred to be abandoned is the hatred caused by attachment. The teacher believes that what can become the antidote to both desire and hatred must be the nature of both non-attachment and non-hatred, so it is considered to be the nature of both. However, it is not accepted that one dharma has the nature of both, but rather non-attachment and non-hatred (which are not in an intermediate state) are separately called equanimity. Their aspects are, in order, thinking: may sentient beings have happiness, may they be liberated from suffering, may they have joy, may there be no near and far and attachment and aversion, may they be treated equally, and abiding in these. If sentient beings do not have happiness, etc.,

Because contemplating on gods and the like is inverted. If inversion is also unwholesome, how can it become wholesome? It is not that one understands suffering and the like as happiness, but rather that one wishes these suffering beings to be happy, and because one contemplates with this intention, it is wholesome. If that is the case, since it is impossible for all beings to have happiness, is it an inverted intention? Although that is the case, it is wholesome because of the goodness of the thought, and because it is an antidote to unwholesome things such as harmful thoughts, and because it is entirely for the benefit of beings. As it is said in the "Garland of Jewels": "Completely benefiting others is happiness, not benefiting them is not happiness." If one thinks that wishing all beings to be happy and so on is the nature of intention or desire, and love and so on are also without anger and so on, arising from the mind and wishing for others, how can they become their aspects? Although it is true, there is no fault because one wishes for all beings to have happiness, so it is in accordance with desire and has no anger. The object of these immeasurables, that is, the object of focus, is sentient beings in the desire realm, because it is the antidote to harmful thoughts and the like that are focused on sentient beings in the desire realm. The sutra says, "He abides having a mind endowed with love, without hostility, without rivalry, without harm, vast, become great, immeasurable, completely cultivated, believing in one direction and pervading, completely done." The meaning of what is said, etc., is that the mind that is in accordance with love is the mind that has love. It is in order the antidote to the afflictions of near-mindedness, resentment, jealousy, and hatred, so it is without resentment, etc., the three. It is vast because its fruit is great, it is become great because it acts in the form realm, it is immeasurable because it focuses on immeasurable beings, and it is completely cultivated because it has abandoned conflicting things. Thus, the three words without resentment, etc., and one, one, one, one are in order the antidote to conflicting things.
