Compassion is taught through the means of cause, fruit, ground, object, and the benefit of purity. The term "one-sided" refers to indicating sentient beings who possess a location, by means of the location. Because it is belief and action, it is belief. Because it is believing in all sentient beings simultaneously, it is pervasive. Because the actual absorption is attained, it is perfected. Because it follows for a long time, it is said to abide, as explained in the Discrimination of Reasoning. Among these, immeasurable joy is mental ease, so it exists in the first two dhyanas. The other three immeasurables are only meditative equipoise, so although they are not capable, they are clear and similar to the main practice, so some believe they exist in the six dhyana grounds. Some believe that it is only the main practice, so it exists in the special dhyana and the four main practices, i.e., five. Some also mention non-equipoise and application, so it is believed to exist in ten places: the four access concentrations of desire and dhyana, and the five main practices.

This is the reason why. However, if it is thought that love and the other three exist in the desire realm and near concentration, then (love) is similar to the immeasurable of application, object aspect, and the nature of the actual basis. Their application subdues the afflictions, and the path that cuts off obstacles (because it is free from attachment and obtains the actual basis, and because it is held by the actual basis, it obtains the immeasurable, so even strong factors such as hatred cannot overcome it.) actually abandons (afflictions). The way to practice this is: if the practitioner has few afflictions, then just as there is happiness in one's own mind, or hearing that other Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Noble Arhats, etc. have happiness in their minds, in the same way, may all sentient beings have such happiness, and immediately generate aspiration. If, because the intrusion of afflictions is too strong, one cannot aspire in this way for all sentient beings, then divide sentient beings into three

If these sentient beings, who are drowning in the river of various sufferings and do not possess manifest joy, could quickly be liberated from suffering and possess manifest joy, how wonderful it would be! With such faith and understanding, one should also meditate on loving-kindness and joy. Equanimity, on the other hand, begins with the ordinary side and ultimately views enemies and friends equally. These four immeasurables are first generated by the wise among the impure; otherwise, they cannot be generated, because the unwise cannot generate them.

It is like that. (In the latter three dhyanas, the inner senses have attachment to tangible forms. Why are these three liberations not established in the third dhyana? Because there is no attachment to the second color to be abandoned, there is no impure liberation.) In the second dhyana and so on, because there is no eye consciousness, it is said to be free from attachment to color, as stated in the Ṭīkā, therefore, successively, it is the antidote to the attachment to color in the desire realm and the first dhyana, so it is only in the first two dhyanas. Moreover, this is the purifier included in the actual thing, it is the belief and intention, so it is only the antidote of suppression or prolongation, but it is not the actual abandonment. Among them, perceiving inner form and formlessness as (one who obtains the mind through form), either not separated from attachment to form, or separated from attachment to form. Or, the Ṭīkā says, it is not destroying one's own form perception, or destroying it and looking at external forms. Or, in the commentary on the Compendium of Topics, it is said that relying on the absorption of formlessness, the viewer manifests as form perception, and abandoning form perception and manifesting the perception of the four names, are explained in order. The third impure liberation is at the edge of the fourth dhyana, and its nature is the antidote to attachment, so mainly there is no attachment, because it has the appearance of impurity, so it is not impure. Therefore, transforming pleasant forms, viewing them as impure, and realizing them directly with the body of samadhi, it is said to be non-existent. (The former two are the three.) These, together with their retinue, are of the nature of the five aggregates because there are following forms. (Because it is shaken by pleasure, it is impossible to turn away from pleasure, so there is no impure liberation. If the third dhyana has no attachment to color, how can the fourth dhyana have it? Because it arises there.) The necessity is that because the mind is discouraged by practicing impurity, it is greatly rejoiced and praised, and attachment arises to the transformed impurity. If the first two liberations are not achieved, if attachment does not arise, it is achieved, so it is also for observing that. The impure liberation is not shown in the first three dhyanas because those grounds have joy and pleasure.
