Because if one thinks of that place as suffering, if one likes and craves that place, is it impossible to achieve non-attachment? Or because it is a flawed meditation, is it impossible to achieve? So it was thought. (Yogis generate liberation and subjugation, etc., for two reasons: to cut off afflictions and to gain mastery over absorption. From that mastery, transforming earth, etc., into gold, etc., as desired, making things stable, able to last until this era, thus able to bless, able to abandon and retain life, able to make Mount Sumeru enter into dust particles, etc. Both can achieve freedom from afflictions and knowing from wishes, as well as the four correct knowledges, etc., and the miraculous powers of the noble ones.) The good, pure, and undefiled formless samadhi alone is liberation; that which is afflicted and not in samadhi, like the mind of the dying existence, is not. (Because this is only good.) Some think that in those formless realms, thinking of the mind and mental factors born of maturation, there is also a mind that is not in samadhi other than the dying mind. According to the former view, formless non-samadhi is only the mind and mental factors of the dying state. Not only the actual state of the formless, but also the path of liberation of proximity gains the name of liberation, but the path of non-interruption does not gain the name of liberation, because liberation is turning away from the lower ground, and it is focused on the lower ground. (That is, the first two are for the desire for color, the third is for the unpleasant, and the formless is because it turns away from and faces the lower objects.) The eighth liberation, the liberation of cessation, is the absorption of cessation spoken of in the second place. Why are these called liberation? Because the first two and the third and the formless and cessation are, in order, turning away from the desire for color and dejection and attachment, as well as the perception of form and perception and feeling, or all conditioned aggregates. Others say that cessation is because it is liberated from the obscurations of absorption.

It is called liberation. Among them, the obstacle to entering into samadhi is that if there is some obstacle, the mind cannot be competent, and even those who have separated from the desires of the three realms cannot generate the real basis of the first dhyana. This is how the commentators explain it. The mind that enters into cessation is the most subtle summit of existence in the three realms, and that (with cessation as its object) is extremely subtle before finally entering into equanimity (in order to cut off the stream of consciousness). When arising from cessation, just like a catapult, from the purity of the summit of existence itself, and from the purity of the sphere of nothingness without anything below, with the noble, uncontaminated mind, one arises from cessation. Thus, the cessation samadhi and the mind that enters into that samadhi are the summit of existence, and therefore are only contaminated. The mind that arises, however, can be both contaminated and uncontaminated. Among these liberations, in the first three, the first two are appearances belonging to the desire realm, the birthplaces of form, which are unpleasant, and the third has pleasant objects. If these are not emanations based on samadhi, then? Indeed, they are, but what belongs to the desire realm is emanation. The objects of the four formless liberations are the suffering of the higher realms and the realms of desire, and the truth of arising and the truth of cessation, included by "etc.," and the truth of the path that accords with the aspects of subsequent understanding, are all of the higher, lower, and own realms. Even if not mentioned at the root, those formless liberations are likely to be signless, signless samadhi, so those non- (this refers to the ten grounds other than the seven above) learning signless samadhi, because they do not separately examine and take cessation as their object, are therefore also cessation of non-separate examination. The object of the sphere of infinite space is also unconditioned space. Liberation is not established in the third dhyana because there is no desire for color in the second dhyana, and because it is moved and shaken by the essence of supreme bliss. Thus, even in the third dhyana there is no desire for color, so what liberation from suffering is there in the fourth dhyana?
