The nature of the third and fourth (dhyanas), the element of earth, what they counteract, and their objects of focus are just like the second liberation, which is observing form in the formless realm. Furthermore, the ground and nature of the four color suppressions, etc., should also be understood as in the third liberation, the liberation of ugliness. The difference between liberation and suppression is that liberation merely turns away from the object, but does not suppress it. Suppression, however, can instantly transform blue, etc., or various shades of blue, etc., into something undesirable as one wishes, because it is based on conviction. Even when focusing on impure objects that are the source of all defilements, defilements do not arise because of the suppression. The reason why suppression is not taught for the formless realm is that if form is suppressed, then the formless is also suppressed, so it is not taught. Noble ones suppress (form) by contemplating the suchness and characteristics of form, while ordinary people suppress (form) by considering what is attractive and unattractive, and how they are interconnected. Therefore, they mix all forms together and suppress (form) by cultivating the perception of a single taste of unattractiveness. The noble Asanga explains it this way. The teacher Guṇaprabha says that some people suppress (form) by focusing on colors without attachment or aversion to good or bad. Some say that if that were the case, then these places of arising of suppression would also become of the nature of non-anger, because they are described as being of the nature of non-attachment. Therefore, (it should be understood that) both good and bad are suppressed, and seen as a single taste of unattractiveness. This is how the former teachers explained it. Furthermore, in the Sutra Arising from the Ten, it says: "Earth, water, fire, wind, blue, yellow, red, white, space, and consciousness—these ten are the all-encompassing places of arising that continuously expand and pervade earth and so on." The first eight of these are of the nature of non-attachment, which counteracts attachment. (The four, blue, etc., are the result of the latter four suppressions.) Earth exists only at the edge of the four dhyanas (because it arises from the combination of the four suppressions). The sphere of activity of the first eight is...

In worldly terminology, the eye is called the "earth" of color and shape. Water, fire, and wind are also elements. Like that, they are the sense-sphere of form used in the desire realm. Some do not consider wind to be the sense-sphere of form (because the four elements also cling to color and shape), they say that the object of wind is the sense-sphere of touch. Space and consciousness are the first two formless realms, and their respective domains are their own four aggregates. (The undefiled cannot increase in all realms, so they are the objects of these.) Other sense-spheres are not considered "exhaustion" because the seven, such as the eye, do not pervade the vessel-world (because there is no such category), smell and taste do not pervade the form realm, and sound has no permanence, so it is not considered "leakage." The "Nothingness" and "Peak of Existence" are not considered "exhaustion" (because the object is not clear and inconsistent with contraction and expansion). From the summary, because infinite space and consciousness accomplish infinite and immeasurable "exhaustion," they cannot be separated from it. Or some say that because those two are the result of "exhaustion," they are not considered "exhaustion." The difference between liberation and the like is that qualities are established sequentially, first turning away from the object, then overcoming, then pervading. Because the former is complete and pure, the latter arises, so it is increasingly superior from top to top. Therefore, there are small, medium, and large, as well as both cause and effect, and only the result, as explained in the commentaries and ṭīkās. Among these, except for the liberation of cessation, the others are also common to ordinary beings, and the absorption of cessation is only for noble ones, as has already been said in the second chapter, and all are the antidotes to cutting off attachment. Secondly, explaining the dharma of distinction, how are liberation and the like obtained? Among the twenty-six, the liberation of cessation is obtained through the liberation of cessation, and the basis and so on have already been explained in the second chapter, and the remaining twenty-five are previously familiar.
