It is the fifth. Because it is contrary to the view of self, it is selflessness. It is the cause of the principle of the seed of suffering. Because it arises immediately, it is the origin. Because it is a continuous connection, it is arising. Because it is manifestly accomplished by many causes and conditions, it is a condition. Because the aggregate of suffering is destroyed, it is cessation. Because of pacifying the three fires of the three poisons such as attachment, it is peace. Because there is no harm of suffering, it is excellent. Because it is free from all faults of karma and afflictions, it is definite emergence. Because it leads to liberation, it is the path. Because it possesses the reasoning of means, it is reason. Because it truly accomplishes Nirvana, it is accomplishment. Because it constantly and truly transcends, it is definite deliverance. In one aspect, it is the antidote to the sixteen views and examinations, such as permanence, pleasure, self, the view of self, without cause, only one cause, the nature being permanent but the temporary changing, clinging to previously abandoned thoughts, no liberation, viewing suffering as liberation, the bliss of meditative concentration being excellent, and viewing liberation as not permanent because of repeated degeneration, there is no path. This path is bad. Other than this path, there is another path. The thought that this path will also regress, the antidote to these sixteen views are the sixteen such as impermanence in order.

Those associates other than the excellent ones do not possess aspects. Even if any of them were to assert that they do not possess aspects, it would contradict the assertion that "mind and mental factors, basis and object, and possessing aspects, and being associated are also five aspects." Therefore, the object is the realm, and the aspect is the mind's way of grasping, that is, possessing the aspect of the realm (of all minds and mental factors), so they say. Furthermore, if asked what the nature of these ten consciousnesses is—virtuous, non-virtuous, or neutral—the first, conventional consciousness, is all three: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral, as appropriate. The other nine consciousnesses are solely virtuous. (Here it is said that contaminated consciousness is included in what arises from meditation, while the remainder is included in the path of truth.) Fourth, the first consciousness, conventional consciousness, exists in all the realms from the desire realm up to the peak of existence (because all objects of the three realms are considered to be there). In the six meditative realms, such as the preliminary stage of the first dhyana, there exists what is called the knowledge of dharma, because those realms focus on the suffering of the desire realm and so on (truths), and it does not exist because it does not focus on the formless desire. In the six dhyanas and the first three formless realms, that is, the nine uncontaminated realms, there exists what is called subsequent knowledge, and in the first three formless realms, subsequent knowledge is included only by the path of meditation. Just as subsequent knowledge exists in the nine realms, so too do the knowledge of the four truths and the two, the knowledge of exhaustion and the knowledge of non-arising, totaling six, exist in those nine realms. Here, what is included by the knowledge of dharma exists in the six realms, and what is included by subsequent knowledge exists in all nine realms, and the knowledge of the four truths that exists in the first three formless realms is included only by the path of meditation in the aspect of subsequent knowledge. The knowledge of others' minds exists only in the four main dhyanas, and not elsewhere (this is included by clairvoyance, and the aspect is the composition of form, so it is not in the preliminary stage and the formless realm). That knowledge of others' minds is based on the desire and form realms, but not on the formless, because individuals are not objects to each other. The consciousness called the knowledge of dharma is based solely on the desire realm.

Indeed, because it is the antidote to desire, Dharma-knowledge does not manifest in the upper two realms, because Dharma-knowledge focuses on desire, while the formless realm does not focus on desire. If Dharma-knowledge primarily refutes desire, then when born in the form realm, one is free from attachment to desire, and because of abandoning it through transference, it does not refute it. Some say that even if one is born in the desire realm and is free from attachment, Dharma-knowledge still manifests because the residue of the aggregates of the desire realm remains. The teacher Bhadanta says that Dharma-knowledge only manifests in the desire realm and not in the upper two realms, because the minds of aversion, etc., that correspond to Dharma-knowledge are only present in the desire realm. Alternatively, because the basis of discipline that follows Dharma-knowledge is the four elements of the desire realm, and these are not present in the upper two realms, Dharma-knowledge is only based on the desire realm. The basis of the three realms refers to the eight consciousnesses other than knowledge of the minds of others and Dharma-knowledge. Fifth, then what is the nature of these consciousnesses in terms of the four mindfulnesses? The wisdom of cessation-knowledge is only one mindfulness, because in the teaching on mindfulnesses it says, "Dharma is other than body, feeling, and mind," therefore it is only Dharma-mindfulness. The wisdom of knowing the minds of others does not focus on the body, so it is the latter three mindfulnesses. The remaining eight consciousnesses other than cessation-knowledge and knowledge of the minds of others, accordingly, sometimes focus on the body and sometimes on the Dharma. If karma-knowledge focuses on the undefiled vows, then it also becomes body-mindfulness, so it is all four mindfulnesses. (Conventional knowledge is the object of all.) Sixth, then what do these consciousnesses take as their objects mutually? The domain of activity, that is, the object of the wisdom of Dharma-knowledge, is nine consciousnesses, because Dharma-knowledge with respect to the path focuses on the seven undefiled consciousnesses other than subsequent knowledge, and Dharma-knowledge included in suffering and origin focuses on conventional knowledge and the defiled knowledge of the minds of others. Path-knowledge
