Second, explaining wisdom in detail. Second, explaining wisdom in detail. Second, in explaining wisdom in detail, there are eight aspects: the classification of the nature of wisdom, the certainty of number, the aspect, the ground and support, the establishment of mindfulness, the object, the manner of possessing, and the manner of attainment. Among these, the first is that the sutras say there are ten wisdoms: (Dharma and things and conventional, the minds of others and suffering, accumulation and cessation and the path, exhaustion and non-arising. This is a summary.) That is, Dharma-wisdom, subsequent-wisdom, conventional-wisdom, knowledge of the minds of others, wisdom of suffering, wisdom of the origin, wisdom of cessation, wisdom of the path, wisdom of exhaustion, and wisdom of non-arising. All the wisdoms spoken of are gathered into two types: those with outflows and those without outflows. Among these, the first, that with outflows, is called conventional wisdom, which sometimes grasps both its own and general characteristics, but mostly focuses on objects that exist conventionally, such as pots, cloths, men, and women. Wisdom without outflows is only of two types: Dharma-wisdom and subsequent-wisdom, because wisdom of suffering and so on are included in these two. Among these, the object of conventional wisdom is all phenomena, conditioned and unconditioned. ("Meditation, virtue, place, mind, nine," etc.) Because eye-consciousness knows form, etc., it applies to everything accordingly. The sphere of activity of what is called Dharma-wisdom is the suffering of the desire realm, and the origin, cessation, and path included by "etc." The sphere of activity of subsequent-wisdom is the suffering of the two upper realms, and the origin, cessation, and path included by "etc." (Space and non-analytical cessation are not included in the four truths, so they are not their objects.) Thus, there are three wisdoms. Dharma-wisdom and subsequent-wisdom themselves are the four, such as wisdom of suffering, because of the difference in focusing on the four truths as objects (divided into thirty-nine types). From Dharma-wisdom and subsequent-wisdom, that which is not the nature of view, due to the difference in focusing on the four truths as objects, there are four aspects of wisdom of suffering, etc. (which are not the nature of view).

Those themselves become the knowledge of non-arising and the knowledge of cessation, which is the realization of the four noble truths that arises after the Vajra-like Samadhi. The initial arising of these two, the knowledge of cessation and the knowledge of non-arising, is the subsequent knowledge of suffering and its origin, because it focuses on suffering and its origin, which are encompassed by the aggregates of the peak of existence, with impermanence and so forth, and causes and so forth, as its objects. Other than the initial arising, the subsequent knowledge of cessation and knowledge of non-arising also focuses on other truths. The Vajra-like Samadhi focuses on the four truths of the peak of existence, while the initially arising knowledge of cessation and knowledge of non-arising focuses on suffering and its origin. This is the tenet of the Vaibhashikas, which is to fixate on differences where there are none. So, are the objects of the Vajra-like Samadhi and the knowledge of cessation and knowledge of non-arising the same or different? If the Vajra-like Samadhi is of the nature of the smallest fraction of what is to be abandoned by meditation at the peak of existence, and it focuses on the first two truths, then it is the same. However, if it focuses on the cessation of the path of meditation, or on the path, i.e., what is the knowledge of Dharma, because it is the antidote to the three realms, then it is not the same, because these two types of knowledge necessarily focus only on the aggregates of the peak of existence initially, just as when someone is struck by a poisoned arrow and is dying, the poison initially spreads throughout all the limbs, and finally, immediately after death, it gathers only at the site of the wound. (When divided into ten) Among the four, knowledge of Dharma, subsequent knowledge, knowledge of the path, and conventional knowledge, the knowledge of the minds of others is set aside. (Other minds) contaminated (are focused on by) conventional knowledge, and uncontaminated (are focused on by) knowledge of the path, and also by the difference in antidotes, it is also knowledge of Dharma and subsequent knowledge. (How so?) Thus, the contaminated knowledge of the minds of others is the knowledge with worldly aspects, such as minds with desire and without desire, which ordinary beings rely on meditation to produce, and the knowledge that noble ones rely on meditation to produce from the stage of subsequent attainment, which is conventional knowledge. If a noble one knows the uncontaminated mind of another with the uncontaminated knowledge of the mind, then that is knowledge of the path, because it has the aspect of the path.
