Yes, because it does not understand the contaminated, and because mind-consciousness can understand cessation, but that cessation is not mind, nor is it another consciousness, because it is not the aspect of those. The knowledge of the path is also established as the knowledge of dharma and the knowledge of subsequent, therefore the uncontaminated mind-consciousness is these three consciousnesses. Mind-consciousness does not understand the higher ground, because the lower ground's dhyana, etc., do not understand the higher ground's dhyana, etc. (That is because the lower realm is not a superior realm. Therefore, the object of the fourth dhyana's contaminated mind is the five grounds, up to the point where the object of the uncontaminated is the four grounds.) It also does not understand the faculties, because the path of faith does not understand the path of seeing, and the path of liberation in time does not understand the path of liberation out of time (i.e., the faculties have been transcended). It does not understand the person, because the path of non-return does not understand the path of the arhat, and the path of the hearer does not understand the path of the solitary buddha, etc. (That is because one cannot understand by one's own power, but if blessed by the Buddha, etc., even the person and faculties that have been transcended can be understood. Here, the contaminated noble ones are not mentioned because their mind-consciousness is blocked.) The word "transcended" here is intended to refer to the higher. Furthermore, other-minds' knowledge is only the object of the present mind of others, so it does not perceive the past that has passed and the future that has not yet been born. Why? Because knowing the past and the future are, in order, the recollection of previous abodes and the knowledge of death and birth, and those are also conventional knowledge. The mind-consciousness intelligence that is in accordance with the aspects of dharma-knowledge and subsequent-knowledge (not of its own kind), also cannot recognize each other (one another), because those two mind-consciousnesses aim at different antidotes of the desire realm and the higher realms. (Because it is intended not to focus on the opposite realm.) Furthermore, there is no other-minds' knowledge on the path of seeing, because the path of seeing is short in duration, there is no time to practice mind-consciousness, and it is because it is uncontaminated and uninterruptedly placed on the truth.

Moreover, understanding and faith in the Buddha and the Sangha arise from truly and manifestly understanding them, leading to trust, rather than manifestly understanding the minds of others. This assertion constitutes a tenet. Practitioners of the higher vehicle do not accept that virtues such as knowing hundreds of thousands of worlds arise in an instant. The path of seeing becomes the object of knowing others' minds, so its distinctions should be explained. Among these, when noble Hearers know others' minds, due to their dull faculties, they can only perceive the first two moments out of the fifteen moments of the path of seeing. As for subsequent knowledge, if they wish to know, they must accomplish it through other efforts. Even if accomplished, (because a long time elapses in between,) they will obtain the sixteenth mind (and that mind) will have passed, and they will not be able to perceive what has passed.\ Then, the first two moments will also become imperceptible, because if they wish to know them, they begin to apply effort, and when the effort is accomplished, those two moments will have ceased. If this is said, then the effort is not begun by saying, "I will know these two moments," but rather by saying, "I will know the mind of this person." When the effort begins, simultaneously with the accomplishment of clairvoyance, the first two moments that have arisen will be known, according to the Vaibhashikas. If this is so, then subsequent forbearance and so forth will also be known. Therefore, the effort is directed towards the general, not the specific, because it cannot be known. Therefore, these also have no distinction, but are merely distinguished by conceptual thought. Like a Pratyekabuddha, when knowing others' minds, they can perceive the first two moments and three of the eighth moment. Hearers need to accomplish it through great effort, while this (Pratyekabuddha) exerts less effort in the effort, so after knowing the first two moments, clairvoyance is accomplished within five moments. Even so, the ninth moment and so forth cannot be perceived, because other efforts are needed to accomplish it. Moreover, because of fatigue, the effort cannot be completed even in seven moments. Some believe that after knowing the first two moments, they make other efforts and thereby know the fifteenth and third moments. Hearer
