When meditating on breathing and loving-kindness, it is because of clinging to self-characteristics and general characteristics. Not only that, but regarding things like a vase, cloth, drinking yogurt, drinking something, going, staying, etc., the authors of the ṭīkā (commentary) say that there are also forms different from self-characteristics and general characteristics. Knowing the Four Noble Truths is entering into the form of each truth, so it has four aspects. The object of knowing others' minds, the undefiled mind consciousness of others, is also the knowledge of the path, so the knowledge of the path similarly has the four aspects of the Truth of the Path. The defiled mind consciousness of others is the form of the self-characteristic of knowable mind and mental factors (i.e., knowing attachment, etc.). Moreover, when clinging to the mind, one does not cling to mental factors; when clinging to mental factors, one does not cling to the mind. When clinging to feeling, one does not cling to perception, etc. Therefore, both defiled and undefiled knowledge of others' minds take each single entity of mind and mental factors as their object. Then, wouldn't it be contradictory to what the Blessed One said in many instances: "For a mind with attachment, one truly knows it is a mind with attachment. For a mind without attachment, one truly knows it is a mind without attachment," and similarly, for minds with and without hatred and delusion, contracted and distracted, timid and strong, small and great, agitated and unagitated, untamed and tamed, unabsorbed and absorbed, uncultivated and cultivated, unliberated and liberated, one truly knows it is an unliberated mind? The Vaibhāṣikas (the Particularists) argue that because they are objects of individual entities, they do not simultaneously grasp two concurrent factors. For example, when consciousness clings to "This is cloth," it does not cling to dirt; when it clings to "This is dirt," it does not cling to cloth. In the sutra, it says, "A mind with attachment," where "with attachment" means associated and mixed with attachment.
