Because the first four are the nature of views, and because consciousness and mind exist in the same way as views. The sutra also says: Thus, the noble hearer who possesses hearing knows the noble truth of suffering as it is. From then on, at that time, the inverted consciousness and inverted mind that arise with the thought of permanence in that impermanence, and the inverted views, whatever exists, should be abandoned. Thus and so on, it is said extensively. Other schools say that even the noble stream-enterers are said to generate desire, and that desire will not arise without the view of seeing happiness in suffering and the inverted consciousness and inverted mind of seeing purity in impurity. Therefore, all four views, as well as the two inverted consciousnesses and inverted minds of seeing permanence in impermanence, and the two inverted consciousnesses and inverted minds of seeing self in non-self, these eight are to be abandoned on the path of seeing. The four inverted consciousnesses and inverted minds of seeing happiness in suffering and seeing purity in impurity are to be abandoned on the path of meditation. Thus it is said. The Vaibhashikas say that only the consciousness and mind that are aroused by views are inverted, and others are not. The arising of desire in the noble ones is like a wheel on a flint, and mistaking the image in a picture for a yaksha is a temporary illusion caused by the power of conditions, not an inversion. If it is considered an inversion just because of this, then the noble ones will also have the inverted view of self, because it is impossible to generate desire without considering women and oneself as sentient beings. Thus it is said. Other schools that differ from the previous two schools say that a stream-enterer named Noble Speech Master once said to the abbot Ananda: Because I am overcome by desire, my mind is therefore in pain. Gautama, with your compassion, please explain the supreme peace. In response, the noble Ananda said: Because of inverted consciousness, your mind is completely in pain. Therefore, you should abandon the painful cause of having desire. Because it is said thus, the mind and consciousness are inverted.
