It is said that all eight wrong views are abandoned by meditation, and the four inverted views are abandoned by seeing. Not only are there distinctions in views, but pride also has seven aspects (from the perspective of the object). What are they? Being conceited is the general characteristic of pride, but from the distinction of form or object, due to being inferior, thinking oneself to be particularly superior or equal, or thinking 'I am equal,' thus the pride of being conceited; due to being equal, thinking oneself to be particularly superior or excellent and equal, the pride of superiority; even more than being particularly superior, thinking oneself to be particularly superior, the pride of pride; being conceited about the five aggregates of appropriation as self or belonging to self, the pride of thinking 'I am'; presuming to have attained qualities of contaminated and uncontaminated that are based on meditation but not yet attained, manifest pride; being conceited that one is slightly inferior to the most particularly superior, the pride of thinking 'I am slightly inferior'; and being conceited by viewing non-qualities such as bravery in killing as qualities, wrong pride. Then, what is the difference between manifest pride and wrong pride? Manifest pride is the thought of having attained qualities similar to those to be attained, thus it has a basis. Wrong pride is thinking 'I possess qualities' when one does not possess qualities, thus it is without a basis, so the commentators explain. Alternatively, the first is being conceited that one has attained qualities of a higher ground that one has not attained. The second is being conceited that one possesses qualities of one's own ground that one does not possess, so some explain. The Vaisesika Sutra also states that all pride, without exception, is based on the view of the perishable aggregate and has the characteristic of being conceited, but it becomes sevenfold due to the distinction of the cause of being conceited. The action is being arrogant towards lamas and qualified individuals, and being disrespectful without physical and verbal service. Due to disrespect, one does not receive instructions, thus rebirth occurs, so it acts as a basis for the arising of suffering. Then, according to the treatise Entering the Wisdom, (presuming to establish oneself by relying on others,) 'I am superior. I am equal. I am inferior.' (These three, and presuming to establish others by relying on oneself,) 'There is one superior to me. I am equal.'

There is. There are those who are inferior to me. (These three are self-righteous in negating others in relation to oneself.) There is no one better than me. There is no one equal to me. Thinking that there is no one worse than me is a manifestation of pride (these three). If asked how to correctly explain the nine manifestations of pride that are spoken of? The nine manifestations of pride spoken of therein can be summarized into the pride based on views, the excessive pride, and the slight pride that are spoken of here. First, the self-view of "I am" arises, and then pride arises, so it is called pride based on views. Like this, targeting those who are equal to oneself, thinking "I am the best" is excessive pride. Thinking "I am the same as him" is pride. Targeting those who are better than oneself, thinking "I am inferior to him" is slight pride. Targeting those who are good, thinking "There are those who are better than me" is slight pride. Targeting those who are the same, thinking "There are those who are the same as me" is pride. Targeting those who are the same, thinking "There are those who are the same as me" is excessive pride. Targeting those who are inferior to oneself, saying "There is no one better than me" is pride. Targeting those who are the same, saying "There is no one the same as me" is excessive pride. Targeting those who are good, thinking "There is no one worse than me" is slight pride. If one thinks that one is slightly inferior to someone who is very excellent, this should be an attitude of humility, and it is reasonable to classify it as slight pride, then how can thinking "There is no one worse than me" be pride? Because in this group, although there is no one worse than me, I am also good, which is a kind of pride. This is explained from the Entering Wisdom Treatise. From the chapter of the Discrimination Treatise, it is explained that the thought of "I am the best" is pride in relation to the inferior, excessive pride in relation to the equal, and even more pride than pride in relation to the particularly excellent, because it possesses the characteristics of these three. Similarly, for the remaining situations, one should also understand accordingly. (Here, the seven types of pride are summarized into one because the mind is proud and the perception of the object is similar, so they are classified as one. And there are five different ways of perceiving views, so they are divided into five. Some people also think that the thought of "I am"

And the pride of wrong views is to be abandoned by seeing. Because some think that the other five are to be abandoned by meditation, in order to eliminate this view,) all of the seven types of pride mentioned earlier are to be exhausted by seeing and meditation. Is it because the co-emergent is to be abandoned by meditation and the imputed is to be abandoned by seeing? Or, according to the Vaibhashika school, that which is focused on what is to be abandoned by seeing is to be abandoned by seeing, and that which is focused on what is to be abandoned by meditation is to be abandoned by meditation. If the noble ones have not abandoned what is to be abandoned by meditation, do they engage in it? It is not necessarily the case, (even though they have not abandoned contaminated faith, sleep, eyes, etc., faculties, and the faculty of suffering, they still engage in it,) what is to be abandoned by meditation is killing and so on (including the seven misdeeds of body and speech), and the unwholesome actions of body and speech such as taking what is not given, which are aroused by the afflictions that bind them, are also those seven. This is because they only focus on the form of the Dharma to be abandoned by meditation. (They do not engage in these even if they have not abandoned them, because they have abandoned the increasing wrong view, just as one cannot stand up if one's waist is broken.) Then, do views of the aggregates, etc., also become things to be abandoned by meditation because they focus on the contaminated aggregates of grasping to be abandoned by meditation? If those that only focus on what is to be abandoned by meditation are to be abandoned by meditation, then views of the aggregates, etc., although they also focus on what is to be abandoned by meditation, do not only focus on what is to be abandoned by meditation, so they are not to be abandoned by meditation, as explained in the commentary. Just as killing, etc., are to be abandoned by meditation, so are the craving for destruction and the craving for existence. Among these, the craving for destruction is the desire to seek impermanence as meaningful, thinking that even if the three realms become selfless, it would not matter. (Noble ones do not have this, because they have abandoned wrong views.) The craving for existence is the desire to be born in the three realms, thinking that even if one is born as a self, faculties, and a bad body, etc., it would not matter. (Noble ones do not have this, because they have abandoned the view of permanence.) The commentary says that the word "likewise" refers to things such as the thought that it would not matter even if the self on the side of existence were to become the son of the elephant king, the protector of the earth. These are to be abandoned by meditation.
