It is not because of the heat, but because it is not irradiated from directly above the continent, but obliquely from the south. The days are also short because the distance traveled in the east-west direction is short. (Scholars) explain it this way. (When traveling south, when the sun returns, the sun moves outward from the continent onto the ocean, a distance of six and one eighteenth of a yojana from the continent, and most of the light shines on the ocean, so the ocean and the water flowing from the ocean become warm, and trees and other plants that grow in the water grow. When traveling north in summer, the opposite happens, the continent becomes warm, and the ocean becomes cold. Moreover, according to the Abhidharma, because its part quickly leaves the edge of Jambudvipa, the night is long. Because the middle leaves for a long time, the days are long in spring and summer.) No matter which continent, the sun passes from the edge is short, and when it passes from the middle, it is long. The glorious Kalachakra practitioners believe that the circular rotation itself has near and far. Then, why is it that the moon is not visible at all at first during the waxing moon, and then gradually becomes visible, the full moon is visible, and then gradually diminishes during the waning moon? This is because it is very close to the center of the sun, and the sun's rays shine on the moon, causing its shadow to fall on the other side, so the moon appears to be completely diminished (this is also because the sun and moon are combined in the empty sky, so nothing can be seen). When it is far away from the sun, the part obscured by its own shadow becomes smaller, so the moon appears larger. When the moon is so far away from the sun that its own shadow does not obscure it at all, the moon is completely visible. Here, some say that the noble Asanga and others believe that half of the moon is made of crystal and half is made of beryl, so due to the difference in the upside-down, the moon appears to increase and decrease. When the crystal is completely visible, the full moon is visible. When the beryl is completely visible, it is invisible. When they each appear half, the visible part is also half. But this is not the case, the noble Asanga explained that the moon increases and decreases due to the difference in the shadow moving up and down, and he believes that the up and down here refers to the opposite sides.

It is not said to be made of lapis lazuli like agate. Those gods who dwell in the sun, moon, and stars are counted among the Four Great Kings. (The rabbit on the moon was drawn by the lord of the gods to show the bodhisattva rabbit's form to the gods. According to the Abhidharma, the lowest level rises one krosha above the water. Therefore, the summit of Mount Meru rises thirty thousand yojanas above the fourth level. The first level rises sixteen thousand yojanas beyond Mount Meru, and the other three rise half as much.) The description of the mountain is that Mount Meru has four levels above the water line. The distance between them is ten thousand yojanas each. Of these, the first level rises sixteen thousand yojanas, the second eight thousand, the third four thousand, and the fourth two thousand. Some say that it rises thirty thousand yojanas from above the water, and then after passing ten thousand yojanas above, it shrinks by sixteen thousand yojanas, and so on. The lamas believe that Mount Meru gradually swells from the water, and when it rises ten thousand yojanas, the shrinkage is sixteen thousand yojanas, and so on. In either case, the rising is from the substance of Mount Meru. Master Gunaprabha believes that the description of the shrinkage is sixteen thousand yojanas and so on, so Mount Meru becomes thinner like a stupa above the water line. The so-called "its face is eighty thousand" is considered to be the circumference. Of these four levels, the first is inhabited by yakshas holding jewel vessels, the second by those holding garlands of flowers, the third by those who are always drunk on winter wine, and the fourth by the Four Great Kings themselves and their retinue of gods. Just as the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings dwell on these levels, so too do the gods of the retinue of the Four Great Kings dwell on the seven golden mountains. The word "also" is to include the mountains, trees, water, and so on of the surroundings and continents. Therefore, the commentary says that in that class of gods, all the gods are the greatest.
