Second, in showing the places of sentient beings, the place of the evil destinies is twenty thousand leagues below this Jambudvipa, which is the beginning of the great hell, the Avici hell. The size of that place (also in each direction) is twenty thousand leagues square, so it is called that. (If asked: How is it contained within this continent? The continents are not solid, but exist like piles of grain.) Therefore, its base is forty thousand leagues from here. (It is said to be below Jñānaśrī.) The sentient beings dwelling there have no rest from suffering, and because the suffering is uninterrupted, it is Avici. Above Avici are also the Extremely Hot Hell, the Hot Hell, the Great Howling Hell, the Howling Hell, the Crushing Hell, the Black Line Hell, and the Reviving Hell, the seven hot hells stacked one above the other. Some (in the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa) say that these seven hells are located on the sides of Avici. From the actual ground (the Himalayas), the Reviving Hell is thirty-two thousand leagues below this, and the other seven are said to be four thousand leagues apart. If this is combined with the distance of twenty thousand leagues to the Avici hell mentioned here, then it becomes eighty thousand leagues from here to the base of Avici, so the base of Avici clearly rests on a golden ground. In that, the sentient beings in the Reviving Hell, due to the power of their past karma, hold various weapons in their hands (appear, those) and attack each other with the thought of enemies. When they are cut into pieces and lie as if fainted, (a cool wind blows) a voice comes from the sky saying, "Revive!" and when those sentient beings revive, they fight each other again (those who are born there are those who have been aroused by strong hatred, who hold grudges, and who kill). The Black Line Hell is where the jailers draw black lines on the bodies of those sentient beings and then cut them with saws, etc., from the top of their heads to the soles of their feet. When the top is cut, the bottom is restored, and when the bottom is cut, the top is restored. (Here, it is hating the Three Jewels, parents, and Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and urging to do what should not be done and lying.)

Gathering and Crushing is when those beings are struck with iron hammers and crushed and squeezed between iron mountains that resemble the heads of goats. When they are thrown out, they regain consciousness and are crushed again (Here, those who enjoy killing cattle, goats, sheep, and wild animals, and who mainly engage in the three unwholesome actions of the body are born there.) Crying is when the iron ground is terrifying because of the burning, and when they enter the dense forest, the flames burn and they are burned for many years. Due to the power of karma, they have tongues that are a thousand yojanas long, and they are plowed by a burning iron plow pulled by bulls whose horns and hooves are made of iron (Here, those who enjoy killing and drinking blood and who practice deceptive measurements are born there.) Great Crying is twice as great as that kind of suffering. (Those who hold wrong views, have strong desires, and practice deception are born there.) Heat is being born in a three-tiered iron vessel and being cooked and burned by burning flames. (Those who harm monks, Brahmins, parents, and many beings are born there.) Extreme Heat is twice as great as that kind of suffering (Those who kill those worthy of offerings are born there). Uninterrupted is when the body burns as a single flame in an iron house, experiencing suffering. (Whoever says what is not Dharma is Dharma, and what is Dharma is not Dharma, hates the holy ones, and says there is nothing, falls into the Uninterrupted Hell, these people are born here.) Therefore, these eight are mainly due to the suffering of heat, so they are called the Eight Hot Hells. Each of the eight hot hells has sixteen additional (surrounded by parts) on the sides. Why? Because those hot hells have four on each of the four faces. (The fourth is:) After escaping from the actual situation of the suffering of heat, there is a pit of burning ashes that is knee-deep. When those hell beings go there, the skin, flesh, and blood on their feet fall off, leaving only bones, and when they lift their feet, the flesh grows back again.
